Turbo Oil Drain Line O-Ring Recommendations

Post by CorpsOfficer » Fri Jan 04, 2019 1:50 pm

Greetings all, long time lurker looking for assistance concerning oil leakage near the turbo oil return line of my 2006 FWD S80, the 1st gen P2 model.

I had a leak at the gasket where the return oil line meets the turbo that has since been fixed. Now, however, I have a much larger oil leak where the return line meets the oil pan. I seem to have cut or malformed the o-ring when re-seating the line.

Does anybody have any tips or recommendations on how to properly seat the o-ring that joins the return line to the oil pan? I used Volvo part #31251439 for my initial faulty repair. I've seen others use silicone to hold the gaskets in place while re-seating the line. Just looking for recommendations from anybody who has done this job in the past so I don't have to go through this process for a third time.

Thank you for your time.

Well, wish I found this video before I did this, would have saved me some time. Plan to do this again soon to fully seal up the last oil leak I have in the area. Thank you very much for pointing me towards this video. Much appreciated.

Is this video also suitable for a S80 2.8 T6 with a oil leak of the oil return?

Probably not. I'm not familiar with the 6 cylinder models but I believe the 2.8 is the twin-turbo one. Try this post and go from there: viewtopic.php?f=11&t=61238&p=313703#p313703

For the Xc90 I did the work from above, but the process appears to be the same for the Driver side (Pass side may differ). If you can do it from below it would take less bending and blind feel. (on an XC70 I did it from below and it was like in the video) I am not sure which pipe you are inquiring about - looks like oil return off the turbo to the oil pan. If this is correct remove the top two fasteners (could be torx or allen - mine were torx), then swivel the pipe so you have clearance to lift out. Beware of the oil pipe o-ring that is in the pan - it may or may not come off with the pipe. If it doesn't, stick a finger in and hook it out. On reinstall put the o-ring on the pipe, pipe in hole, swivel into position and insert the gasket. Torque it up. My experience for the XC90 2.9T.

Thanks for the reactions.
In case of the XC90, is this also a B6284T engine with a geartronic gearbox attached to it? In my case it is and working from under the car I have to use extentioners the reach the bolts raching between the gearbox and the oilpan. But if this is the best option, I’ll work this way. Do I need to remove parts like heatshields exhaust parts or exhaust heatshield?

Is there anyone with tips or tricks?

I had a pretty bad leak from the lower end going in to the block on the 2001 T5 and after trying to reseal it 3 times I purchased a new metal tube from Volvo. It must have been slightly bent allowing lots of oil past the o ring and onto the driveshaft.
