Won't crank or start 2000 volvo s70

Post by Randall0208 » Thu Jan 10, 2019 4:48 pm

I lent my 2000 volvo s70 to my sister and it all the sudden wouldn't crank or start for her. I got it towed to my house and a wire connecting the starter solenoid to the starter had corroded off. I replaced the starter today and put everything on correctly but it wouldn't start or crank still. My dad knows more about electricity and tried hotwiring it and jumping it but it wouldn't work. He said the power went lower when he tried hotwiring it or something like that and said theres a short in the system somewhere. I don't know a damn thing about electricity, only mechanics. If anyone knows common areas for shorts in a 2000 volvo s70 or knows some steps I should take to solve this PLEASE HELP. Thank you!!
Also has a brand new battery can't be that.

Edit: I didn't put the bracket on that connects the rear of the starter to the engine because I need to get some new nuts for it as the old ones were frozen on. I realize that gives the starter ground I'm pretty sure but wouldn't it have worked still when we hot wired it?

Have helper hold ignition key in pos 3.

Put voltmeter between solenoid power and engine ground. Do you get 12v?

Key still in pos 3, put voltmeter between starter large terminal and engine ground. Do you get 12v?

If you get 12v in both locations, starter will crank unless starter is bad or engine is seized.

Thank you!! I'll try that. What if I don't get 12v on one of them, what would be your procedure?

Depends on what voltage that you get on which terminal of starter to engine ground. If you get less than 12v but greater than 1v, I’d ask next for battery voltage, voltage from neg battery terminal to engine ground, voltage from pos battery terminal to engine ground. All of those checks are with key in position 3 so that starter is trying to draw full current. There is a different diagnostic path if you get 0v on initial starter measurements, etc.

thats beyond me in terms of electricity ill have to tell my dad that and talk to him

Make sure the green and red striped thin wire is connected to the correct terminal on the new starter. I had the same issue after putting in a new starter this summer, and I had put the wire on the wrong terminal. Mine works fine without the bracket on the starter-- I still need to swap out the bracket from the old one.

Thank you all for the responses! I looked over the starter and I put the green wire on the wrong spot! Not sure why there’s two spots to put it but I mixed them up. Starts right up now. Thank you
