newbie ti volvo and the forum

Post by michael1952 »

hello,

just getting my 1st volvo ....for a second vehicle

A 1996 850 with 45,000 actual miles ...1 owner ......A/T

what can i expect .....GOOD/BAD?

what are any issues i may have with this model?

its has been well taken care of..oil changes etc...

she did mention transmission was replaced last year (2018) by factory dealer

why would that be with a car with that low mileage?

was owned by a now 90 y/o lady so she was in her 60s/70s when purchased so i doubt its been abused...and looks like all maintenance records

anything i should look for/check before driving it everyday

thanks

45k miles?New car!
Timing belt....URGENT(if there are no records that it has been replaced). With that low mileage i expect it to be original.
After that...change oil,coolant,filters and spark plugs(Volvo plugs).
Check DOT on tyres(10years is max lifetime).
Re-fuel it and enjoy!

Having to replace a transmission with that low of mileage is really unheard of. I would be curious to know why as well. You will find people on this forum with several hundred thousand miles on their original transmissions. You may be able to contact the shop or dealer that replaced and get some records stating why the replacement was needed.

Welcome to the forum! I think I speak for everyone when I say we would love to see pictures of that time capsule interior.

i will look a the records when i get home and see if there is a detailed repair

she may have meant possibly transmission service

she is a very elderly lady and may not have understood what they did

i have been told if the car is not driven much it can cause issues??

i dont know if thats true or not

at any rate the car averaged around 2000 miles per year..possibly more as she had 2 vehicles and rotated driving them

new Michelins so no tire worries for a while

thanks

Likely fluid leaked below the acceptable level and 90 yo lady just pushed the petal harder until kaput went the transmission. My 85 yo mother still insists on driving and her car has a standard transmission. For years she has been observed pulling off in the wrong gear, rolling down the highway with the tachometer all the way over due to being in some low gear. At any case she is completely unaware the engine is grinding away or bogging down. This is likely why such a low mileage car has had a transmission rebuild. June
