'99 v70xc - Blower motor runs slow 30755485 FEBI TYC BEHR

Post by jvl »

Hi,

my blower motor started running poorly.

When I turn the fan speed up to max, it does run but doesn't seem to run at full speed.
I suspected the power stage/resistor to be bad, but did some tests and now suspect the blower motor itself is faulty.

Here's the diagnostics I did:
- ran the blower at full speed, measured input voltage at blower motor, which was about 12.2v with engine running

- disconnected blower motor plug, then connected blower motor to temporary leads at cigarette lighter. It ran, but not faster than when connected to power stage. Voltage at the cigarette lighter is 13.5v without load.

- temporarily removed cabin air filter to test with less air resistance - no difference/improvement in air output flow

the output from the power stage varies between 0 - ~12.5volts depending on the chosen speed setting.

The current blower motor doesn't seem to be OEM. I can't find any brand name on the housing. It does have a sticker that says "02-2016" (I bought the car 09-2016) Is it likely that it's failed already? Anyone have experience repairing these?

Should I just get a new blower motor? Or replace the power stage as well? How can I tell whether the power stage is good?

Thanks!

Hey.

My blower motor doesn't have a brand on it either, only that little paper "price tag" with a date on it.
Mine started to seize about 2 years ago, squealing and whining and slowing down. I took it out, took the fan off, cleaned what I could with contact cleaner. Let it dry, and pumped it full of WD 40 High Performance White Lithium Grease. Put the whole thing back together, crossed my fingers and put it back in. Been working fine ever since, but starting to make a little groan now and then just recently. I guess 2 years and change of extended life was worth it, though. :)

When the bearings start to fail, you can sometimes find the motor will slow down when accelerating and speed back up when slowing down as the bearing is either compressed or released when driving. If you are not finding that then try doing what our friend sommerfeldt suggests and see what happens. If nothing then it may be the blower resistor, but as you seem to find different voltage ranges it may be the resistor pack is ok. They can though fail at some speeds only.

Thanks for your replies!
The motor isn't noisy, it doesn't whine. It does vibrate slightly at full power.
When feeding it directly from the battery it isn't going faster so I guess I will start out by replacing the motor first and then the power stage if needed.

I'm in no rush but would like to get it fixed.
I guess I'll start looking on ebay for a good deal.
Which aftermarket brands are good or should be avoided?

Thanks!

Behr is one of the original brands. There may be others but can't say if they are good as I either use OE Volvo or Behr or whatever junkyard ones I find. I have a bunch of them and resisitor packs in boxes in my garage pulled from junkyard cars. I test them whenever I pull the glove box out for any reason and then store them for the future.

Good luck with the repair.

Thanks Neil, I will update whether a new blower motor fixes the issue, but that update may take a while.

Thanks for the part number. This saved me pulling the fan again because I forgot to take a picture when I took it out last sunday.

Just ordered a new febi bilstein blower motor assembly for about 85 USD through amazon.

That's a great price on that blower , jvl!

It looks like the options are

Behr
Febi
Volvo
TYC. Maybe only on the P2 blower? ( confirmed)
