2002 XC70 location of fog light relay needed, not working

Post by mikpsychos »

Hello everyone, first post. Will someone PLEASE reach out and tell me where the front fog light relay is located? I have a 2002 V70 X/C (or XC70, whatever). My fog lights were working fine, and one day just crapped out. The #18 fuse on the side of the dash is checked and fine. When I look online, I see that everyone carries a fog light relay, but nobody says where it is located for replacement. I would think the logical place would be in the under-hood fuse block, but according to the "map" on there, it is not there. PLEASE HELP! I do about 80% of my driving in the dark, and they really do help when they are working. Thanks for any input.

You can google Volvo wiring diagrams and find them on the web ( we don't host them here by legal agreement with Volvo)

That will give you both location and trouble shooting guidance. Relays are seldom bad, are both bulbs good?

Had no luck with the Googling - just shows me fuse blocks which I already know don't contain my relay. I feel its the relay because the lights were working fine one day, and both not working the next day, with the fuse being fine. The car does have roughly 200K miles right now, but the fog light bulbs were only about 4 months old. Sorry about the caps and all...was my first post, hadn't read the rules yet.

Have you checked the bulbs? Have you checked the sockets. Were it me I would start there, power the bulbs individually with a power supply and check your sockets with a VOM for power. Just b/c the bulbs were new, doesn't mean they are not bad - could be a bad batch or even a cheap brand. It has happened to me. Although both failing at the same time does hint to another issue.

You need to pull the wire diagrams for your car - the relay most likely is located on the CEM to the left of the steering wheel (do a search and you will find the link). If the fog lamp relay is on the CEM, ascertain its location and then do a search and you will find videos on how to remove the CEM. You should be able to just pull it down to do the work you need to, meaning no need to pull the entire unit out. (Look for water intrusion issues though).

If you go this route of checking the wire diagram, check what else is on the circuit for clues. If relay checks, and you have power and good bulbs, then I would look at the switch and maybe even the light stalk.
