I hope this doesn't sound like a dumb question, but I have a very low mile transmission from a FWD S60 and I'm hoping I could somehow make it so a transfer case could bolt up to it and use it in an AWD car. So will it work or is there no way to convert it?

For some reasons, I thought the Trans is the same for both FWD and AWD versions?
May be I am wrong...

No. The final drive for FWD will not have the splines to drive the angle gear. The FWD case has a small opening for RH axle that i too small for the AWD collar. If the FWD trans is similar year and from a turbo engine car it will have the same internals and gearing and could be put in the AWD case and use the final drive from the AWD trans.

That's what I figured, thanks!

It is, minus the transfer case. However there are holes on the FWD for the transfer case to bolt up to. But like jimmy said, the shaft is smaller.

Can you just not add the AWD parts and make a FWD car?

Here is a link to a thread where a guy says he did make the conversion. He says he went from a 5 speed auto, apparently in an AWD car, to a M56 from a FWD car. It’s the last post in the thread.

Yes, both turbos.
