XC90 Key transponder failing.

Post by donnymol » Wed Feb 06, 2019 8:19 am

I have seen that others have this issue as well. My car is 2012 xc90. It intermittently wouldnt start, but last night and this morning i am having no luck. The dealership is telling me its about $400 for a new key + tow. Has anyone else found a more reasonable solution?

Happened to my 2005 XC90 key.

Keep the FOB, if you replace ONLY the key portion, then about $250.

I posted some info in forum.

As a point of clarification, engine turns over with the key but does not start or does not turn over at all? And you have only one key so cannot compare against another?

Do you have a second key, which makes diagnosis very easy.

This was my case...I used the second key for diagnosis.

Yea, just the one key. I am pretty sure its the key/circuit/transponder. I am just seeing if there is another solution rather just buying a new key from the dealership

Both of my Key Fobs need programmed. The key works, not the remote. I do have a Valet Key also, which is what I use. At the my friend's shop, where I help him at times, we can get every key re-programmed for about $100.00, some we are able to do ourselves. But, not the Volvo Key Fob......Nope, Volvo has that locked in. I was told by the dealer $350.00 per fob. What is bad is it only takes a few minutes to do.........Been living with it this way..... Will continue to do so unless I win the lottery.

We can unlock remotes. After this procedure you can program it to car, use official VIDA or we can program it use our own methods.

By any chance does the key NOT stay latched 180 degrees from the folded stored position? If the key doesn't stay latched then the chip can be out of range when the remote folds over at 90 degrees to key.
