Please can anyone comment on what could be a problem on my 2006 V70 with 60.000 on the clock.

When I shift the stick into drive or reverse it is not particularly 'smooth' and from time to time when the engine
is warm the shift from neutral to drive or reverse has a worrying harsh 'crunch'.
Will this be something simple or is it likely to be 'bank loan' time.

Thanks in advance.

Is it like a clunking noise?
The upper and lower torque mount are common failure on P80's, I don't know if they are prone to failure on a 2008 P2 as well.

Check those upper and lower mounts:
1) visually: are the bushings worn/torn?
2) with a helper behind the wheel: open hood, look for excessive tilting of the engine when the helper shifts back and forth from D to R while braking.
I have replaced both of those mounts and it cost less than 150 dollars in parts I think. Labour would be a little over 1 hour if you have a shop do it for you.

When was the transmission oil last changed? If it has not been done it is way past due. Volvo used to say sealed for life but over here they now recommend 50,000 mile change intervals. Do not get any yahoo to change it if you can't do it yourself. Pressure flush will certainly ruin the transmission.

JVL has pointed out the other main culprits, but also check the mount under the crank pulley has not separated.

Thanks guys for your suggestions.
Following your advice I had the car into the garage and asked the guy to change the transmission fluid
and also have a look for anything 'loose or hanging off'
I am glad to report that there has been a big improvement just by changing the fluid as the mechanic
could not find anything else untoward.

Many thanks again.

Recommended transmission oil flush is 50,000 miles. The trans should never be power flushed.
