1998 S70 2.5 10V B5252S PCV questions

Hey guys,

I have a 1998 natural aspirated Volvo S70 with 298.000 kilometers on the clock and since a week or so I have noticed it doesn't get through the "glove test". I've searched through the database on this website and YouTube and I have some questions before replacing parts because I wanna do this right on the first go with OEM-parts. First of all, when I look on websites such as IPD or FCP I can't find my specific engine type (see screenshots below).

This confuses me a bit. I know I have a B5252S engine with the Fenix 5.2 system, not the B5254FS engine with the Bosch Motronic system. My first question is: Am I overlooking something? Are the pcv's on those two engines identical? If not, can you guys help me in the right way? I'm not being lazy, I just can't find the right set.

But they both work on turbo model of the engine. I have a natural aspirated version of the engine. Are there major differences to look out for when servicing the pcv-system on my car?

Most parts fit the same however the 10v wasn’t available in North America, so FCP or IPD won’t list it , try Volvopartsoline.com.
There is no breather hose to the top cam cover and the short hose from the breather box to the bock is slightly different (can’t remember why or how ), I ordered that hose model specific from the dealer. I also made up a few hoses with copper elbows and oil cooler hose - again is was so long ago I can’t remember which hose - I followed a write up on the UK Volvo owners club forum, go there and do a search on PCV by user ‘CNGBifuel’

I have the 2l 10v engine, however did not have to do the pcv yet on this car.

have a look there, check for the components where it says w/o turbo. Think you will still have to take a look under the hood which hoses etc you need.

Things like hose 3 not needed and the trap is different - again the 10v doesn’t exist in North America, you’ll have to source parts for it from Europe. Or if it’s cheaper from US ,I suppose you can not use some and modify other parts.

True. I've found an OEM-part supplier here in the Netherlands that offers the complete PCV-kit for my S70 for about 160 euros. I only need to buy a seperate intake manifold gasket. I've watched enough videos on YouTube and in the database on this forum to take this job on. I actually looking forward to work on the engine, to get to know it better and stuff. In the past I owned what we call "Nether-Swedes" (Volvo 300 and 400 series which were produced in the Netherlands), all with 4 cylinder Renault engines, except the 2.0 liter engine I guess. So this will be my first serious maintenance job on the 5 cylinder engine.

I think you can throw out the flametrap, it was not installed on later model years as far as I remember. Running without an oil trap should improve vacum suction

Can you explain what you're saying with: you can throw out the flametrap? Do you mean it's probably broken or do you mean my 98 S70 isn't equipped with a flametrap?

There was a honeycomb flame trap on earlier cars which official Volvo procedure on servicing is To remove and discard

Okay, thanks for the insight Abscate! I have a follow-up question though. If I indeed have the honeycomb flametrap and I remove it... Then what? Maybe I'm overthinking it but I reckon the honeycomb flametrap is connected with hoses. If I leave it out, what must I do with the hoses etc? Just reconnect them/replace them and leave the flametrap out?
