s70 2000

Post by volvomadness » Mon Feb 18, 2019 7:27 pm

Some one told me this was a crossover year for the transmission (4 or 5 speed) and timing belt (ccvt or old type)

Can the transmission and timing belt set be determined by the vin?

Some 2000 AME S70 AWD where equipped with 4 speeds. The rest where all 5 speeds.
If it is a 2000 AME S70 AWD it could be a 4 or 5 speed. If it is front wheel drive only it is a 5 speed.

Outside the US and Canada the 9th position in the VIN number is the transmission.
In the US and Canada the 9th position in the VIN number is a check code.

I also don't know if the VIN will tell you the transmission.

And overall, trusting the VIN can be sketchy unless it is an issue you (or someone) has actual experience in. Volvo's literature is well known to have several seemingly random mistakes in it. Best bet is to just look at the transmission for the ID plate, then there is no guesswork at all. For example, this is an AW55-50SN, a 5 speed:

For the timing belt set the VIN may be more reliable, but again the engine serial number will nail it for you, no mistakes.

It sounds like they know just enough to get you into trouble.

Short version, timing belt changed in 1999, CVVT evolved starting in 1999, sneaking into engines slowly.

There are at least three engines and three transmissions in North America in the s/V70 model line and CVVT varies between them, I do believe they all use the mechanical type timing belt tensioner though.

1999 was the first year of EXHAUST CVVT, the NA engines were non CVVT UNTIL 2000, when they got intake CVVT

And, of course, more and more of our cars are getting engine swaps , so the VIN won't catch that!
