When to replace injector o-rings

Hello all,

I am in the middle of multiple maintenance items to bring my 1998 S70 GLT with 285K miles up to reliable daily driver status... One item was the PCV system where I removed the injectors from the intake. The O-Rings are still there, but are over 20 years old now, should they be replaced, or is it something that's not a problem unless they are torn? I noticed the FCP Original Volvo kit I used did NOT come with them, but the one from IPD does...

If they do need to be replaced, do I need to go original Volvo, or do the aftermarket ones from IPD work just as well for 1/4 the price?

Thanks again for the help as I get this car back on the road to 300K+ miles!

That's quite old, usually people recommend replacing them even at 15y old, but mine and a few I pulled from the junkyard were still perfect soft and sealing. Why not hitting a junkyard and grab a few for free? Can't really answer about aftermarket ones, we don't really hear complains about o-rings or baskets, not sure I'd like to spend at 300k for genuine everything everything

Don't forget to smear with vaseline and to clean 'pristine' all metal surfaces where the o-rings will touch (injector included). On my P2 the rail doesn't want to come out ,I usually use a pry bar to be more convincing, the o-ring rubber can get quite stuck in there.

They're cheap and easy. I got some from eBay for a few bucks - o-rings are highly standardized parts made of very standard materials - and they've held up fine for five years so far. If you have any question about their condition, just do them.

There are a couple of fuel injector services that will clean and spec your injectors And give you new Orings for about $20 per injector with a one week turnaround. Might be worth looking at

Easy to replace o-rings.

I used Mr Injector to clean and replace the wear parts on my injectors a couple years ago. Very quick service and reasonable price. Sent a nice before/after report of flow. After 17 years, they were definitely ready for new o-rings and a nice cleaning.

I've done it two ways

(1) Injector cleaning service. They refresh the whole thing and flow test it, it's a great way to be certain about what you have in the engine. I've used Cruzin performance and/or bought injectors that others have refreshed there. CP has been around a very long time and does a good job.

(2) Buy the O-rings from someone knowledgable who you trust. Fuel injector rings can not be just any standard rubber, you can very easily end up with junk on there, or something thicker or thinner than is called for. For P80 injectors I bought two sets from a Volvo enthusiast whose company supplies o-rings, they were size 203, 75 Durometer FKM (Viton).

Looks like the Injector kit from Autozone is $4 per injector and includes the 3 o-rings (Viton) and Pinter cap.

Just the o-rings, in a kit, is only $5 for 12 of them.

Alternatively, Mr Injector has a kit for about $28 that includes the filters as well, or $17.50 per injector for a full service...

I think I'll just pick up the o-ring kit for now and consider the full service soon.

Either of those might be fine I don't know, but keep in mind there are dozens of grades of Viton, different manufacturers produce and sell to different specs, etc.

Heat the plastic tip parts a bit before you swap the o-rings, makes them flexible rather than brittle.
