V70 Steering UJ Problem?

Post by Bobbles » Thu Feb 28, 2019 1:47 pm

Hi All, Apologies if this topic has already been covered, I saw a similar topic relating to S60 steering column UJ’s...
Our 2000 (W plate) V70 Classic has notchy steering. Turning the wheel, either direction, through 45 degrees all feels fine but get to about 90 degrees and it tightens up noticeably, keep turning and it eases until 180 degrees when it tightens again, etc. Turning back to straight ahead is a reverse of the previous, but the 90 degree tightness stops the natural tendency to self centre...
The more I read the more I am inclined to think it is likely to be either the column UJ or the sealing boot bush or both.

In the experience of this forum, is this likely to be the cause, or is there something else I need to look at?

Wrong forum (this one is for P2, not P80), but from your description it sounds like UJ. Easy to check on P2: raise front wheels, disconnect UJ from from the steering column (1 bolt on P2), rotate by hands.
