XC70 2004/2005 front driver door swap?

Post by dayvidlemmon »

I was recently involved in a low-speed collision that cosmetically damaged the front driver (left) door on my beautiful black '05 XC70. Rather than putting on a ton of bondo, my body shop guy suggests finding a good door from a junkyard in the same color, and he will transfer the guts (locks, door cards, etc) over.

I found a guy on craigslist who's willing to part out his black 2004 XC70, and give me a deal on the door - can anyone advise if I'd have any issues putting the parts from my '05 on it? I realize the P2 chassis was facelifted in 2005. Am I better off waiting for an 05-07 door to come along?

No problems. The S60 and V70 got headlight and taillight changes and for all P2 the CAN modules changed in many, but not all cases. The rear doors on P2 are not fitted with modules with microprocessors. There should be no problem with dropping it on your 05. I don't think there were any exterior changes on XC90 until the 2007 headlight and tailight changes (Bi-xenon headlight may have changed, can't recall). The XC90 was too new in 2005 for styling mid-cycle refresh.

Thanks for the response Jimmy, good to know. I should have specified that it's the front driver (left) door. I assume I'll have to make sure he thoroughly transfers over all the electronics from the '05 door (DDM etc).

I've read transferring the door lock is not very easy because of tight area, so good to plan ahead

These doors are surprisingly heavy, you will need a helper to install it. Here's how to adjust the fitment www.youtube.com/watch?v=fybN9k-JodA

Harrys U Pull It in Hazelton, Pa. has an '05 XC in black. They sell complete doors -- glass, guts, electronics, etc. for $45. The real issue with that is that you don't know whether the car has the door you need until you get there and they won't check stock for you over the phone. It is probably worth your time to drive there from Brklyn. Although it is probably 3+ hours one way since its 90 miles from me and I'm an hour west of NYC.

Good tip, E Showell. I have next week off and might be up for a road trip! That's about a 2.5 / 3 hr drive for me, depending on traffic in the city. Thanks!

Sorry, I do see "front" now. Yes, the DDM will need to be swapped but it is on your inside door panel and if you keep yours it is easy.

DL -- Check this site for a detailed review I did of the Harry's experience so you have an idea of what you're getting into. It will help ensure a successful trip.

Never go there for just one part.

I have had remarkably good luck there getting nice, complete sets of alloy wheels for cheap, for example. That can be nice if you want to run a dedicated set of winter tires. Probably no need with the XC, though.

Floor mats, cargo covers, sometimes seats can be had reasonably as well. Body panels and bumper cover too, particularly if they match your existing paint. No cheaper way to source crash panels.

Thanks for the tips, guys. Excellent write up, Abscate. Love the Volvo community.

I may wait for slightly warmer weather - I'm an Arizona boy and wandering that lot with next week's freezing temps sounds a little cold for my thin blood!

Not sure what else I'd need to pick up for my vehicle, it's in pretty mint shape for a 13 year old car with 133K on the odometer. Unfortunately (or fortunately if you're my wife) Brooklyn apartment living precludes me from stockpiling too many spare parts.
