850 SW cargo grill installment

Post by dtbr44 » Sat Mar 02, 2019 1:47 pm

Hi, I am new in the forum, just registered today.
I am running a '95 2.0 SW for 4 years as a hobby, a pure joy, I love every bit of this car, even it had some harsh years behind by p.o. It has 378K kms on it. I order usualy parts from Skandix, Germany.
Today I installed a pair of new gas-struts for the rear door (what a difference!). The old ones were from 1999. :-)
I also changed the gas-springs for the cargo grill. This is an OEM part. Now the new springs are lifting the grill up from the rear seats.
What is the proper way to keep the grill down, behind the seats? Please advise me.
Thanks a lot, DT

there should be a clip on the back of the backseat that holds the cargo grill in place. it is secured by two torx screws. if you don't have it, that is what you need.

That clip is to keep the third row seat in place. There's no locking for the cargo grill. If properly installed the force of the gas springs will keep it in place, leaning against the back rest.
Or maybe you're asking how to keep it in place with the back seat down folded?

It sounds like the grill may be installed wrong, assuming you got the right struts. The force of the gas struts alone should hold it down.

I'm not aware of any clip for the third row seat, either. Just the plastic-surrounded notch ("latch guide") in the back of the second row seat. See https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forum ... =1&t=49056

There is no clip(s) to hold the cargo grille in place when lowered. As the guys have said the small struts/pistons hold it down and up. Can you take a picture of how you have it installed? Are you sure the grille is fitted the correct way around?

Neil.

Hello guys, thank you for the kind feedbacks. I have not got any hook or place to clip on the back of the rear seat. I am wondering what Neil was writing, is it possible that the grill itself is not correctly installed? I attach a few pics how it is temporary solved, a double plastic clip attached to the middle headrest support. I am sure that this is not the way. BR, Tibor

Is it just me or is it mounted backwards?

No, the cage is not mounted backwards (i.e. not fitted the wrong way around) however it was indeed installed wrong. The roof mounts should hook backwards, not forwards. The left mount is on the right side, the right mount is on the left side.

I've installed these a few times, it will be easy to take them apart and correct this issue. Remove struts, remove cage from fitting, remove plastic covers, remove mounts, swap sides, reassemble.

EDIT: removed incorrect step in light of OP's follow-up post below.

Hello guys,
the project is finished. As you said, the hinges were reversed. It took me 10 mins to finish the whole job. The metal hinges were tightened with one T25 srews on each side, easy to Access. The beige color plastic cover is heat welded to the metal hinge, don't force it, comes off together. To refit the gas struts, you need to lean forward down the seats, the grill to come forward more and than snap in place easy. After fitting everything back, the grill holds nice and firm against the backrest, when open stays nicely up inside the roof. Great, I am very happy with it! Ready for the next improvement! Have a nice day! DT
