S60 t5 2012 purge valve

Post by Brianvzyl » Sun Mar 03, 2019 9:08 am

Hi there everyone.

I have a question regarding the following symptoms on my S60 T5 2012.

First of all the car battles to start everytime i put fuel in.

Secondly i have this noise coming from the fuel cap when i release the cap it sucs air into the tank.

I thoughtvit might be a purge valve thtavis stuck open.

So i had an engine check come on fornthe Oxigen sensor. I cleaned the sensor in the intake manifold and it was sorted . Other than that no other engin faults.

Any one have any suggestions. If it is the purge valve then where do i find it on this model?

Thanks in advance.
Brian

See these recent posts and look at pictures and diagrams. It is one or the other, most likely on the radiator for your year.

Hi. Thank you for the reply.

I looked at both the posts. But i cant find anything remotely similar.

Nothing under the manifold. Nothing on or by the radiator. Nothing that looks like the pictures showing the purge valve.

I cant even find the 3rd pipe going to the tank, i can only see 2 pipes coming from the tank going back to the petrol filter.

So not sure what or where to look anymore. Unless i start stripping the car.

It sounds like the tank is being sucked in and then the fuel cap start making vibrating noises and then a high frequency noise the faster i go. And once i stop it is back to lower vibrating noise. If i switch the car off it sounds like the tank is regaining its shape.

Any help please?

Brian: I just noticed you are asking for a 2012 S60. Can you provide the engine version you have - it should start with a B?

Hi SuperHerman.

Where can i find this number. All i know it is the T5 and it is the second generation from 2010 to 2018 and this one is a 2012 model before the face lift.

Thanks
Brian

It is a 2lt engine front wheel drive 77kw power.

Hope this helps?

Hi

I forgotvto mention the engine fault that came on today. Oxygen sensor bank 2 too rich. Think it has something to do with the problem i have on the car. It must be directly related the the heavy fuel consumption it started.

I am unsure that the S60 in South Africa has the same system as North American models. If suction is being created in fuel tank then there is a vent problem. The vent for fuel tank ends up by the fuel filler pipe in right rear quarter panel. If the car is on lift and you follow the pipe from tank up into area behind right rear wheel you will see the rubber or plastic hose end there. There should be something capping that off. I am unsure of what pests live in SA but in parts of US dirt nesting wasps can build a mud/dirt nest over the vent. Spider and other bugs also have built nests or webs over this and blocked it.
The system used on a NA car would have turned on warning light and set message if that vent was plugged long before vacuum or pressure was noted at fuel cap. North America models have a small pump unit mounted back by tank that serves to pressurise tank and closes that vent for a tank leakage test. That leak test pump unit also seals the vent to do its test. If your car has that system then the pump unit could be causing the vent issue.
The purge valve on P3 5 cylinder models is under intake manifold through 2012 and moved to area up by #1 intake manifold branch on Denso fuel system 5 cylinder in 2013 until end of that platform/model. If the tank builds pressure then the purge valve operation would be giving to many vapors and possibly liquid through system and engine would run rich. That could give an oxygen sensor code but there are several kinds of oxygen sensor codes so the exact code would be useful to know.

In USA we have this - look for the something similar on your car or do a VIN look up or look for number stamped on block.

Thank you jimmy57. I will surely have a look to see if i can locate the blocked vent pipe or if there is a pressure test pump.

As for the purge valve it is on the top by intake manifold #1. I checked it and the pipe to the tank is open and the pipe to the intake manifold is also open and the valve opens. So this is not the purge valve issue. But in fact the tank vent.
