p0455 2005 xc90 v8 canister and purge valve locations

Help, Advice, Owners' Discussion and DIY Tutorials on Volvo XC90s. The XC90 proved to be very popular, and very good for Volvo's sales numbers, since its introduction in model year 2003 (North America).

p0455 2005 xc90 v8 canister and purge valve locations

Post by pchalpin » Mon Mar 04, 2019 2:19 pm

I have been searching for three hours on line to find out exactly where the charcoal canister, j-hose and canister purge valve are located on a 2005 xc90 V8. I've gotten a bunch of conflicting information. Put on a new gas cap and the p0455 came back.

I'd crawl under the car, but we had a foot of snow last night.

Is the canister above the rear end?

Is the purge valve near the starter? Can I get at it from under the car?

Thanks,

Peter C.

Canister, J-hose, and pump are above the rear subframe, on the rear (back) side. Pull the spare tire and look up in the wheel well towards the front of the car. An Internet search (image) will give you some idea as to what the components look like like and the general location.

Description of the fault as follows:
Diagnostic trouble code (DTC) information ECM-P045500
Condition- Engine control module (ECM) checks sealing in the fuel tank system by, using the leakage diagnostics unit, pressurizing the tank system and at the same time monitor the pressure build-up. The pressure is a calculated pressure, calculated using measured power consumption on the pump. If the pressure is stabilized and/or does not reach over 1500 Pa within 450 seconds, it is interpreted as a leakage bigger than 1.0 mm in diameter from the fuel tank system. Diagnostic trouble code for major leakage stored.
For more information, see Design and Function. The diagnostic trouble code can be diagnosed when leakage diagnosis is running.
Possible source- Tank cap not properly tightened or not in place. Leaking tank, filler pipe, tank cap, canister, EVAP valve or lines between these components. Fault symptom(s)- Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) lit.

Purge valve is under the top motor mount (torque rod) for the V8, I must have looked this up for someone else- https://forums.swedespeed.com/showthrea ... on-XC90-V8 , link has a diagram for reference (less "correct" purge valve location).

Last summer it appears that I also contributed to a semi-related post here on MVS: https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forum ... 94#p480361 , this one was for a 0442 (small leak). The evap hose coupler (between 18 and 18a in the first link) may or may not be part of your problem but it's worth mentioning as it's been the cause of 2 gross leak failures that I can recall. Normally associated after work has been done in the area, can't hurt to check.

Last but not least, unless you go into VIDA and manually delete the reported codes, it may take a number of drive cycles to get the code and MIL to go away after repair.

ggleavitt:

Thank you sooooo much. I do not know what VIDA is, but I deleted the code with my scan tool, bought a new oem Volvo gas cap, and now am just waiting for "readiness" to happen.

If you're already handy with a scan tool and have a PC of any real capability, there's a VM image of VIDA available. Link on this site I believe and you can find it via an internet search for "VIDA 2014 image". Just read the instructions really well, take your time and be patient. You cannot connect to the car without a separate physical DICE unit but you will be able to see code definitions and parts breakdowns and job instructions and systems description, lots and lots of things. If you're planning on keeping this car, it's a great investment in time to get installed and working somewhere.

Good luck !

Thank you again ggleavitt.

Turns out it was the damn oem Volvo gas cap that was one year old. Got another new on, and the issue is solved and the car passed inspection

Perfect, glad you got it sorted out.

Had a similar issue in 2017 on the '08 - https://forums.swedespeed.com/showthrea ... mall-leak) , I like my OE cap quality but not the replacement cost, so I swapped out the seal from a cheap Stant 10834 cap. Replaced the seal on the '05 as well, just to cover my bases.

I'm not seeing seal being sold by itself, if someone is successful in identifying a cost effective source for just that part, please post.
