Hi everyone, it's been a long time since I have been here. I bought a new car so haven't been driving the 2000 V70XC. But I am giving it away to a friend who needs a car and I need to get it running. I hope you can help.

Last year I took out the AWD transfer case (whew!). What a job. It ran fine but now there is a problem. The drive shaft slides in and out of the transmission case and can disengage from the transmission drive gear. What is supposed to hold the drive shaft in? Is the bearing that is in the shaft support near the wheel supposed to be pressed onto the shaft? Does that keep the shaft from moving in and out?

I'm going to answer my own question. when I removed the angle gear last year I decided to put in a new axle and CV joint assembly. It was not expensive. The bearing on the new assembly has separated from the axle, allowing the shaft to slide in and out. In other words, I got a cheap-ass part that failed after a few thousand miles.

So, this is a good lesson that even on an 18 year old car you do not want to put cheap CarQuest parts in it.
