1993 850 GLT Idle Stall Won't Restart

Post by villachaise »

Hi,
Purchased a '93 850 with ~110k miles. In great shape, maintained at a dealer, but hasn't been used much the last couple years.
Been keeping the battery charged and haven't driven it much in winter because of salt. I have another beater vehicle for winter driving.

Anyways, started it up and let it run at idle for about 20 minutes and went out to shut it off and it wasn't running. Tried to start again; turns over, but won't fire up. Any ideas?

Not sure where to start. I haven't driven it for a couple months just idled in the garage on a full battery. Not sure what would cause it to stop. Didn't notice a rough idle, but wondered if anybody has any ideas where to begin (perhaps spark plugs??)

Thanks

Update: It did start up after sitting about 40 minutes and it's running at 1000 rpm at idle. As mentioned before, it has always been serviced at the Volvo dealer for its intervals and I plan on taking it there for the next. One problem is it hasn't been driven much since it was in last, so want to get it there soon for comprehensive check. Won't be until the end of the month to take it there (I'm in the sticks and 4hr drive to there).

Anything I can check in the meantime? No service lights are on and don't notice any leaks and fluid levels seem good. I had an mid 90s 850 GLT and ran excellent for years until somebody t-boned it. Hard to find 850s especially around here so want to straighten this one out since it's seen such little use over the years....

wow a 93. does it have the 4 lug wheels? that should be in a museum. Its so cold in minnisota Ide just put it away till spring and forget the dealer. work on it your self. they no longer have mechanics that know these antiques. they'll replace a bunch of crap and you'll pay 800 and be in the same spot. drive it to get the old gas out and put premium in. You could have a sticky fuel pump from old gas, water from the ethanol, maby a temp sender problem. but dont fix anything until you have put some miles on it this spring and burned the carbon out so to speak. that's only 5 months away in minnisota.
