OLD Headlights: What to do with them?

Post by Eddystone » Sun Mar 17, 2019 8:31 pm

Here we go...

I replaced the headlights on both of my P80s with good quality aftermarket parts that have dramatically improved the light output.

Now, I have two sets of OEM headlights with bad, grayed-out reflectors that I can't bear to throw in the trash.

Certainly, the glass is worth saving.

What do you do with them? I hate to sell them to someone who doesn't understand the reflectors are bad.

If the glass is in good shape still, you could buy an HID projector retrofit kit and make some really powerful headlights with proper beam cutoff. Other than that, they're basically worthless. I'd take the glass off and throw away the rest. Having spare clear glass is nice.

You could get some chrome paint and try to re-chrome the reflectors if you're bored, but when I looked into it I decided it wasn't worth it. Save the lenses if they are not horribly pitted. You could try converting to projectors as ecbsykes suggested, but other than that those housings are worthless.

I read an article recently in a UK classic car magazine about a company there that re-silvered plastic headlight lenses. Can't believe there isn't someone this side of the Atlantic that can't do the same.

850 headlight lenses I believe are now N/A and there are rumors that P80's may have gone the same why. So definitely keep the lens glass covers. Up here headlights get taken out regularly due to rocks on the roads getting thrown up by vehicles.

Neil.

Probably something to do with liability and vehicle safety laws in NA.
