Volvo to put cameras inside its cars to watch you next year

Post by matthew1 » Wed Mar 20, 2019 11:54 am

Exactly what I was talking about... Big Brother: https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/volv ... onitoring/

These are cameras INSIDE the car, looking at you.
  • Sensors and cameras will be fitted to the next-generation of Volvo cars
  • They will be able to measure slow reactions or if the driver isn't looking at the road or has their eyes closed entirely
  • System can intervene if it believes the user is intoxicated and - using semi-autonomous technology - take control away from the motorist and park itself
  • Volvo will also provide a new Care Key will all cars sold from 2021
  • This will have a pre-set speed limit for when the owner lends the car to their children or friends

I love Volvo and I always have, but this is pretty ridiculous. Unfortunately they have been really disappointing me lately with all of their "innovations" and new ideas. I'll stick with my older Volvos without cameras and distraction-enabling devices, thank you very much!

They say that this will help stop distracted driving, but let's remember what causes it (aside from phones and whatnot)... all of the gadgets that they put in the cars in the first place! Those touch screens that people are constantly fiddling with are half the problem!

BMW is soon fielding interior camera(s) to watch you, also.
The latter is called Extended Traffic Jam Assistant, and it will drive the car indefinitely at speeds below 37 mph as long as the camera in the instrument panel can see that the driver's eyes are on the road.

Not a problem for as long as the camera is inaccessible to the WLAN.
Could save some innocents from intoxicated or fatigued drivers.

I really wonder how much this will really improve safety, and decease accidents, etc. It seems a slippery slope into more and more surveillance.

Beginning in 2008, Volvo began making changes that I find off-putting. Here's another reason for me to stay with older models. 2007 is my cut off point, although I avoid anything from 2000 to 2003.

I agree, although they have made some great safety innovations, their new cars have lost that Volvo charm. Our 2007 XC90 is as new of a Volvo as I'd want.

I have to disagree with the notion Volvo has lost their charm. You have to keep in mind what cars have become in 2019 and factor that in.

I also hate some of the trends in modern cars. Such as no key and the goofy infotainment screen to name the biggest offenses.

Unfortunately we can't roll the clock back to 1969 when the automobile was at it's pinnacle. Yes your Ford LTD had a 7.0 liter V8 and floted down the road like a magic carpet. Not to mention Chrysler had the 426 hemi at 425 hp 0 to 60 in less than 4 seconds.

Today we are looking at cars that watch out for us and it looks like you guys out there hate the idea. The reality is we should not be driving impaired. Not only is it illegal, but immoral. By driving drunk you might take out a innocent family! So in that respect I say my hats off to Volvo for taking the next step in occupant safety. June

Oh I agree completely, I respect what they're doing, I just don't like the way they're doing it. Unfortunately you can't rely on just telling people to not drive drunk or distracted, so manufacturers are force to come up with invasive technology to try to prevent it. If only people were responsible...

As far as new car manufacturers, Volvo is doing great. They aren't falling into the shadows anymore like they were just a few years ago. I just don't like the technology in new cars in general, from the infotainment systems to the cameras and sensors everywhere to the tiny engines and electric motors.

The only manufacturer I still like as a whole for NEW cars would have to be Mazda. They don't want to focus on electric technology since they feel the internal combustion engine can still be perfected. I love that ideology. Plus they still want to make a true driver's car. It's not all about making a car that can drive itself and do everything for you, they want you to actually enjoy driving their cars. I have a lot of respect for Mazda for those reasons.
