v70 2004 receiver bar or hitch.

Post by qwertyjjj » Fri Mar 22, 2019 6:56 am

I would like to use a trailer but wondering what hitch I can fit or if a receiver bar is better?
Can I fit this myself on a 2004 model without any welding?
DO you have to have a ball mount or can some trailer go directly into a receiver bar?

I have this. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/CHT-12318

Easy installation, no welding. I tow 3000lbs frequently and it's great.

You need a ball mount for practically every trailer. I have one like this:

How can I figure out which wire goes where? There doesn't seem to be anywhere to connect the tester to, it's just wires with covering.

I believe this will plug right in to your car: https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo- ... vo-8698079

It doesn't work on my 2007, not sure why they changed the wiring from the earlier models.

Otherwise you can also use a multi-vehicle wiring kit. Just select your year and model on eTrailer.com or some other trailer gear website and it'll tell you wich one to buy.

The OE hitch uses a trailer module connected to the REM for wiring. They'll probably be different different model years since the CAN network is different.

Other aftermarket wiring harnesses will probably require splicing onto existing wiring.

I have a kit, the question is more about how do you test the wires. It's a splice kit.
There are no connection points to connect a multimeter or circuit testing light to

In my 2004, I cannot see anywhere that there is a grey or black connector like that - it`s just wires.

Connect a voltmeter to ground in the trunk. Then probe the wires with the meter's positive probe, at the location where you expect to splice.

It looks like you will need to find left turn indicator, right turn indicator and brakes. You can push a sharp voltmeter probe through the wire insulation to the meter wire within. Press against a solid surface, with some scrap wood in case you go through the wire, but try to just get through the insulation to the wire.

You will be looking for 12v on the meter, when the indicator is blinking, or someone is on the brakes. Check to see if you have the same colored wires as in the video as a starting point (that seems to be a 2007 XC70) or alternatively, identity the wires from a wiring diagram, or by following back from the relevant bulb.

How do I probe a wire that is covered in sheathing?
AH, I see, so you have to pierce it? If I do that, do I need to tape it up after?
