2004 XC90 2.9 Rear End Issue

Help, Advice, Owners' Discussion and DIY Tutorials on Volvo XC90s. The XC90 proved to be very popular, and very good for Volvo's sales numbers, since its introduction in model year 2003 (North America).

2004 XC90 2.9 Rear End Issue

Post by xyourobob » Thu Mar 28, 2019 8:17 pm

My 2004 XC90 2.9 started making a weird screeching/grinding noise and it sounds like it is coming from the drivers side rear. I jacked up the rear of the car and the drivers side rear tire does not spin freely however the passenger side does spin freely and I'm wondering if this is normal? I took the wheel off on the side that I think the noise is coming from, I removed the caliper and the wheel still does not spin freely. The vehicle has about 230K miles and I have replaced the rear wheel hubs once or twice in the past but the symptom was always a loud humming from the wheel which I'm not getting now. These hubs have lasted longer the prior hubs and I'm wondering if their was a new design on these hubs and the symptoms have changed when they are at the end of their life? I'm hoping it's not the rear end...

I would pull the disc off and see if the parking brake shoes have delaminated. This has been known to happen with age on these.

I pulled the disc off and put the wheel back on and she is still binding, parking breaks look good. I guess I will have to pull the hub now...not happily though

My rear wheel hub was seized. I broke the center wheel hub off in the axle because I must have gotten wrong info on torque. In any event how does the rear axle come out of the rear differential? And what is the correct torque for the center hub bolt?

Pry the inner CV out, it is held by a snap ring. You have to get the hub loose from some of the control arms so it will move out of the way.

Been there, done that. Snapped the bolt off on my first bearing replacement, torque value for rear is not straight forward and I was heading towards 105Nm with a "am I sure this value is right?" just before the nut and washer popped off. EasyOut thankfully got me back on the road as well.

Value for rear I believe is mismarked in VIDA as- "Brake caliper rear in wheel bearing housing XC90 (M10) " with Step1: 35Nm then Step2: angle tighten 60 degrees.

Front is correctly indicated as- Drive shaft in front wheel hub, only XC90 (M10) Step1: 35 Nm then Step2: angle tighten 120 degrees (Step2 is 60 degrees if car is not XC90).

These are torque to yield (controlled deformation) hardware, as such they should not be re-used. Even with the spec torque values, I can feel the bolt "stretch" as it gets tightened.

Good luck with your repair.
