Transmission noise 2000 XC AWD *probably* not the angle gear
A new noise (yah!) from my 2000 XC V70 2.4T - kind of a loud whine/moan when started up and shifted into R or D. It is most noticeable when cold. It is not engine noise since it only happens when shifted into gear. I watched some videos on the transmissions and the casings are aluminum and eventually the internals fail due the the steel bearings running in the aluminum housings. Anyone have any ideas about the noise I am hearing and should I be looking at finding a transmission to replace this one? 129k miles. Fluid is full synthetic in the transmission and has been maintained pretty well by me since I purchased the vehicle with 110k miles on it. The AWD system seems to be working and I recently replaced the angle gear oil with full synthetic- it was really really old- like factory old. The noise was occurring before I did the angle gear oil change. Any advice? Thanks!

I'd say it's pretty rare for those 4 speeds to die at 130K. Mine is being replaced at 280K, due to leaking internals (still shifts perfectly!). Not sure what the noise could be though. I wonder if it's maybe just a weird vibration or something. What's the condition of the trans torque mount and engine mounts?

Robbie, you can pick up a used transmission for about $500 and swap it in. If you like the car that’s cheaper than a car payment and can give another 5 years in your XC

I replaced the front mount it was grease soaked and in pieces but the other mounts seemed to be ok but you're right i should check them or replace them to rule them out as a source of the noise. Thanks!ecbsykes wrote: ↑30 Mar 2019, 11:59 I'd say it's pretty rare for those 4 speeds to die at 130K. Mine is being replaced at 280K, due to leaking internals (still shifts perfectly!).
