Why don't I have a vibration damper on my angle gear ?

Post by Fiodor » Tue Apr 02, 2019 2:50 am

Hello everybody, does anyone know what the box under the angle gear is ?
I don't have it on my car but it was on the spare I bought. I checked with the VIN and both cars should have the same angle gear (and they're both from 1997).
When comparing both they look exactly the same except for this part, I'm very intrigued !

Edit: From what I understand it's a vibration damper, however how come I didn't have one on my car ?

Don't be so sure about that, I counted 67 Angle Gear part numbers grouped into 16 exchange part numbers for the 1997 V70.

I'm installing vadis to check if it's compatible or not...

It’s for special people and comes filled with both swedish meatballs and the controller for the third rear seat heater module.

When you go to try to remove the center nut on the damper, #2 of 3, you will discover why your damper is still in someone’s garage somewhere

Merci!

Get the part numbers off both of the Angle Gears.
Good luck in getting VADIS working on a modern operating system, VIDA is what everybody uses nowadays.

I'm not at the garage at the moment but they both had the same number in 1 place.
VADIS gives me the same diagrams for both cars.
My VIN is YV1LW4303V2379327
and the donor car's VIN is : YV1LW5603V2348024

VIDA doesn't work on cars before 99 or so I read.
Installing VADIS is a breeze on a virtual machine, takes about 15 minutes maximum.

@Abscate : Do you mean that someone took it off while working on the angle gear and didn't bother putting it back on ?
And should I go buy some meatballs at Ikea to replace the ones in the new angle gear since they must be 22 years old ?

DiCE does not work on cars before '99.

VIDA has information going back at least to 1975. However VADIS does have some information VIDA does not have. The same is true of some of the older versions of VIDA. Some of the members still use Vida 2012A because the repair section is more informative then 2014D.

Look at the Angle Gear part numbers in VADIS. I counted 67 in VIDA.

Bad news, I'm about to kill myself.
The angle gear I ordered from sweden is shot, the splines are flattened.
It was hidden by the angle gear sleeve...
I'm just hoping that I'll get a refund

Do you think I could weld the sleeve to the angle gear ?

Mini update: The swedish pick & pull refunded me everything.
My mechanic has agreed to try to weld it on Friday, I'll take some picture as we go and try to make a nice DIY guide !

Good luck with that. Had a similar issue with a junkyard angle gear. Looked ok until the sleeve was pulled off. Teeth completely stripped. I was told the design was such that the collar was supposed to be the sacrificial part. Problem is that owner continue to drive them when bad causing this to happen.

Look forward to hearing if the welding works as it would be a good option for down the road as new collars and angle gear are becoming harder to get.

Neil.
