ok I did once get the message "fuel filler cap loose" or something like that. So the code ECM 4308 should pertain to that..... I can do an active test on the evap system using my scanner. So I will replace fuel cap and then see if the code comes back. Would the bad cap cause the long cranking ??? I doubt it..... maybe the fuel pump relay more likely. Maybe they said the relay was changed but changed the wrong one!

one more thing, I put NGK spark plugs in the car. I have read numerous threads today that NGK are NO GOOD on Volvo. I've always bought Volvo plugs but this time in a pinch I bought plugs at advance auto and NGK were the only ones available...... Funny thing, the plugs I pulled out were NGKs also and seemed like newly replaced......... wonder if this has something to do with the problems..............

Evap and fuel cap unrelated to starting

That spark plug work could be. All the coils have a total of seven grounds and they all have to be clean amd tight. They are M6 bolts that both hold and ground each coil

It is possible to plug coil harness in incorrectly, make sure the looms lay naturally

Sometimes handling coils kills them too, but that’s esoterica

Ok, I will check the coil grounds. It is possible the people who had the car before me didn't put them all in.... I know which way the coils lay so that's not an issue but maybe the wiring to them...… is there a "plug" that disconnects the coil wiring so I can replace from another one or get new??? where does it plug in??

update:
I removed the positive battery cable from the fuse panel under the hood to the starter and then to the alternator. Anyone know where I can find this cable new? What is the part number? Also, I replaced the crank sensor, it had some debris on it and looked tarnished. I used genuine Volvo sensor for that one.

Ok need some help again. I took out the positive cable, shielded it, replaced the pcv box while I had the intake out and shielded the new crank sensor. the car now starts up everytime, BUT it has a misfire on cyl 5. I have swapped coils and miss stays on cyl 5. have changed plugs to volvo OEM plugs. no change. what gives??

Inspect the wiring and electrical plug going to cyl. #5. Look for breaks, corrosion, etc. Also, clean the coil attachment bolt and mating surface; if you don't have a good ground, it could cause a problem with the coil.

OK will do, but It was just working FINE before I did all this work but I will check the connector. Maybe that's what's causing the problem

ok, let's revive this post with some update. No good news but an update. I put 5 new coils in the car today. Still misfires as before. Looks like Cyl 5. I know the fuel injectors are working because when I unplug them one by one you can hear the engine runs worse. OK, So I am starting to think vacuum leak as I did remove the intake to redo the PCV box while I removed the positive cable and shielded it. I did NOT replace the intake gasket as it looked nice and glued to the head. SO, maybe a small vacuum leak between intake and head at cyl 5? But I have sprayed with water around the area lightly and no change in RPMs. Water in a spray bottle while car is running. I want to run a scanner on it that can show fuel trims that should give me an idea. I'm looking also for the vacuum schematics for the 2001. I see a lot of heat damaged hoses in the engine compartment

Monitor the coil voltage at coil 5 by back probing the connector.

Next step, remove ECU, then check continuity of Signal wire from coil To ECU. You will Have to research to get right pins because they change.
