850 T5-R resleeve

Post by Ram » Mon Apr 15, 2019 1:47 pm

Hello MVS,

This might be a silly question, but I haven't been able to find a definitive answer.
I have a 850 T5-R, which engine needs a rebuild, do to cylinder wear.
Instead of finding a new block, I've opted for keeping the original block. This means a machineshop will have to work on it, but on the phone, they weren't sure, if they could resleeve it - they don't know if the walls are too thin.
I had the cylinder head off, due to burned exhaust valve, and I could feel an edge down the cylinder.
Should it be a problem to resleeve the cylinders?

PS. the engine runs, and has plenty of power, but uses too much oil.

Ras

You will have To measure the ridge and compare it the Volvo, specification of how much I see allowable To be removed for machining. Are you planning on this machining approach or putting new sleeves in?

A quuick look in my alldara shows Volvo support two oversizes of cylinders and pistons, 0.2 mm and 0.4 mm

If the ridge is under that depth, you could machine your sleeves, then install the oversized piston and ring set no problem

You could always obliterate the cylinders and install darton sleeves.

That is way too cool to watch on a work day. I think I would have one finger left after using that machine.

I'm not sure if it's past the 0.4mm size. But I want to bore out the cylinder and put new sleeves in, so it keeps the original bore.

Yeah I really need this. And I'm trying to figure out how to explain to my wife that it's essential that I have this done to the block...

Tell her the truth, It will make the block stronger and you won't need to do it again for a long long time.

Yeah, I'd like that, but that would blow my budget completely.
Shouldn't it be posible to bore out the cylinders and install new dry sleeves?
