What's the best option for getting a replacement key 2004 XC70?

Post by Spiderland »

My Volvo is stuck on the side of the road. Lost the only key on a walk with the dogs. What is the best/cheapest option for getting a replacement. Not a FOB. Just a key.

The only way is get a new one from the dealership... that I know of.... they're laser cut and you'll need your Vin# and proof of ownership. MDK

Roughly $260 at dealer for a basic key.
Been there done that.
Search forum and you will see dealer is the only solution.

Or give your dog a bone and see if it can sniff the lost key j/k.

In case I ever leave the keys in my locked wagon I taped an extra key within the rear bumper. That key has no chip so it can only open the door. After opening the door you'll need to hit the FOB unlock tab to clear the security. Cost me $20 at a local locksmith.

Another option: Wire a hidden switch in parallel with the door lock switch.

Wow...260$ USD? Seems a little excessive... here in Cincinnati.. I only have one key also... but I've registered my Volvo's with Volvo car care of North America in New Jersey. I'm in the 200,000 mile club and was quoted about a 100$ and even that's steep... madness. MDK

Spider - if you call the dealer and give them your VIN, they can cut the key and you can pick/up, but to get it married to the car you need to have the car at their place. You also need to have everything 'working' as VIDA gets picky about things off the CANBUS when it goes to register keys, I had to replace my siren when I got keys made for my P2, for instance

I owe you an update on forging stuff too..sorry Ive been pushing that off.

If you really get in a jam about a flat bed Ive got a guy who can help out - we do have to throw him bucks as he is starting out poor, but he will be cheaper than the service.

MDK,

This was a few years ago for me...
Key itself laser cut...$80
License...$80
Bring the car to dealer so they can program it (getting married)...$100

It is a ripoff, but we live in a ripoff world...

I'd be back out retracing where I had been with a metal detector. A key blade *not buried in the ground* should light up a metal detector set at low/medium sensitivity and should be easily found with a 'quick sweep'.

I am going ahead with the hid the transponder chip thing before I lose my key. That way I can make hardware store copies.
