ABS Module Questions

Post by melmaclifeform » Sun Apr 21, 2019 9:25 pm

After getting my Volvo running with a new ignition switch, I have found another problem, my ABS module. It's gone totally kaput, and my local repair shop quoted me $800 to repair it. Both me and them are dead certain that the problem is the ABS module, as the speedometer is not working and it also displays a milage of "------".

I was told that the part can't just be replaced with a new one, and that the numbers have to match. Is this true, or can I just grab a new ABS module off ebay and slap it in there to fix the problem?

You could get one from eBay but the solder joints are going bad on all of them just get it repaired. A hundred bucks to repair the module expertly and permanently: https://www.midwest-abs.com/

In the meantime, it is fine to just drive it without ABS.

There are three different ABS modules for the 1999 S70. STC, TRACS and regular ABS without traction control.

TRACS, there is a switch on the dashboard labeled TRACS.
STC, there is a switch on the dashboard labeled "STC".
No STC or TRACS = ABS without traction control.

Make sure you get the right one.

No TRACS or STC: Volvo part number 8619544.
TRACS Volvo part number 8622097.
STC: Volvo part number 8619545.

Check this against the Volvo part number on the one on the car.

In case I wasn't clear enough: don't get one from eBay! Get it repaired.

I can't say enough nice things about Matt @ Midwest. Fast turn, quality work and very reasonable price.

If you are trying to save money, you can get one on eBay or at the junkyard, but keep in mind it can fail at any time just like your current module. Your most cost effective option in the long run is to go through someone like Matt at Midwest ABS and have it rebuilt. I need to get mine done on my '98 as well, ABS light has been on for months.

Anyway as far as compatibility, Rick outlined it perfectly. If you have TRACS/STC, you need one from a car with TRACS/STC. If you don't have traction control, get one from a car without traction control.
