1999 S70NA EVAP Refurb of cartridge bracket and hoses

Post by abscate » Mon Apr 22, 2019 3:13 pm

The EVAP monitor is not setting on Evita - hoses have visible splits

This procedure is for the late 1998-2000 bastards with the canister in front of the rear passenger (right ) wheel

Lets get it done.

I put the car rear wheels up in ramps.

The canuster bracket screws are notorious for rusting, my T5 beat me down last time I did this job, so this time, the big guns came out early

I removed the 2 M8 (12mm hex) on the exhuast bracket inboard, and the one M8 nut facing forward. All three had to be rattled and oiled with PB Blaster.

I did the three disconnects (purge, AIR and TANK to the tank and brought it up to the bench.
The canister is retreat bayonet mount (lift yellow clip), the TANK connection is an oetiker clamp, the purge is a squeeze and release.

The Torx canister retainer had to be drilled out, which was a 5 minute OP on the bench. Its a total Charlie Foxtrot underneath.

I treated the canister bracket with phosphoric acid, then two coats of high temp Rustoleum enamel.

I found PEX 3/4 SS fitting perfect for the new hoses, and attached starting at the back, then to the rollover valve, the one to the rear of the canister (AIR) before installing the canister. You will need side approach Dikes to tighten the tank Oetiker clamps

Reinstall the rollover after connecting the hoses, zip tie the wire for strain relief.

Done. one hour total, having done this before. Probably three hours if you hit lots of trouble fasteners.

Tools needed

Screwddrivers
Drill - good bits
133 socket
12 mm socket
Handle
Pliers
Dikes side cut
Oetiker pliers end cut
phosphoric acid
paint.brush
zipties
replacmenet SS hardware - cheap Lowes stuff here, nothing structural

Have you no pride? Clip that zip tie!

Nice work. I'm so happy I don't have to deal with that rust on my cars. My cousin's 256k-mile '98 V70 M56 was a NY car... it's a crusty mess underneath. Can't even jack it up without crushing the jack point into the chassis. But that thing runs like a top!

Let your zip ties flap freely in the Breeze....

Engineering change order

Remove the M6 bolt with captive nut from EVAP bracket

Replace with SS M6 hex bolt, 38mm, two M8 washers, and one M6 nut, Apply two drops/ 100uL Loctite Blue to threads above nut to secure

Nice job Steve!

I have the same setup on the 99' S70 and it looks pretty crusty, but the hoses are still ok and no EVAP codes, which is weird.

Last tip - if you can get your ramp under your car between the wheels, the ramp won't interfere with access to the EVAP area as much - or you can jack and remove wheel, and use a jack stand, too.
