Expected amount of repairs for year and miles?

Post by IslandV70 » Tue Apr 23, 2019 11:42 am

I bought a 2005 V70 in December with 58,000 miles on it.
It had new tires, a recent timing belt replacement, and all oil changes done at the dealer plus a transmission fluid change at 30,000 miles. The car looks like it was garage kept. I now have 65,000 miles.
So far:
1. Right rear red LED side marker lights went out. Replaced lens with new one that had LEDs in it. LEDs went out again :(
2. The front right parking light went out.
3. The cam position solenoid went out. Cleaning it was no help, but a new one fixed it right up.
4. The fuel pressure sensor went bad. It was replaced by the dealer with the wrong type and by me with the right type.
5. The top motor mount was ripped up and replaced.
6. The air box thermostat was stuck on hot. Fixed it by bolting it in the cold position.
7. Lean bank 1 errors fixed by finding and fixing vacuum leak.
8. The passenger window needed to be retrained to close correctly. It wasn't that hard once I realized the Volvo label for fuses was backwards as to which fuse is for which window
9. The radio barely works. CDs skip or don't play and the lights are out for the controls.
10. The speakers are awful. Radio and speakers to be replaced ASAP!
The actual money involved has not been much THANKS to this list :D !
So to me this seems like a LOT of things for a 58K car. For someone who used a shop for all repairs this would have been a total financial disaster. Thanks to some DIY skills and help on here it worked out well. Is this rate of malfunction going to keep on going or is this just what happens to 14 year old European cars? I am hoping I am getting to the end of the list and it will settle down for awhile.

Some of this is just aging - 14 years is quite a long time even if the mileage is low.

Pretty much all of these are independent and should not be predictive of ongoing issues but good luck anyway.

10 cents per mile if you do it
20 cents if shop does work

You will need To replace things on time, not miles, of course. I would do a complete cooling group refresh of everything rubber if you want to drive in the PM model.

A car in that bracket retails for about 7k. People who are buying a new Lexus for 40k are losing that much I;money cost, let alone depreciation.

Speakers are 8ohm on those Volvo radios. Time for an Android replacement with Bluetooth??

I've been looking at the Atoto A6 as a possible replacement for the Volvo radio. Good reviews and they are suited to 8ohm impedance speakers; perfect for a Volvo.

Looks like the peak of the hill is in sight.
+1 on all rubber replacement.. Radiator plastics might be brittle too.

When you look at a new to you used Volvo, the time and mileage tell one third of the story.

How it was driven tells another third.
Kid car driven in track mode? Money pit

How is maintained, the final third.
Lots of third party parts and oil change stickers from Quick No Lube? Bad

Evita came from a stickler owner who fixed everyth8ng that broke, was driven with love, and is the tightest steering, best braking, driest engine I’ve seen.

I’m expecting another 100k from her

Those are astoundingly low miles. Which means it sat a lot of the time, or for a very long stretch unmoved.

I agree with all these guys - it's age of components and time. All the rubber bits and hoses get hard and wear out, gaskets dry out - cars need to be used regularly to keep everything lubed and compliant. You may have to do some catch up until it's back to "normal."

We bought ours from an acquaintance, with low miles. Early dealer receipts on the east coast, then a competent local mechanic who ticked all the maintenance boxes regularly - but....they used aftermarket cheap parts which are already worn out, and the engine was very dirty, like someone never lifted the hood even to look. Now I'm fixing and replacing things that should have been done or were neglected.

The list of repairs gets actually much longer in time. You are only at 65000 miles but also at 15 years of age - for example the CD skipping is due to sagging rubber dampers due to age. This is my list with things (can check it under the video as well www.youtube.com/watch?v=aT5BHuKfTR0 )

So yes, many things need fixed. It also depends who is fixing these things, and which parts are used. Bringing the car to the Volvo dealer is a big drain of money. I rather buy used parts from Ebay/junkyard or from sites like Fcpeuro (look for Lemforder, Sachs brands) and fix it myself - if not possible, it is important to have a honest garage that is very used to these cars - they will typically have several S60 parked in front.

I can just tell you that soon you will need suspension parts, maybe an ignition coil, a cabin fan blower, a PCV, water leaks from blocked sunroof drains (even if the sunroof is never used www.youtube.com/watch?v=4jMAWVN2N0Q ) and plenty of other little things. I owned a Honda Civic in the past with about the same miles, and I can tell it also had plenty of things that needed fixed, perhaps less than the Volvo but then it was far less equipped or complex. Don't forget, these are basically luxury cars when it comes to the equipment and refinement.

The good part is, once every one of these things are fixed, these cars keep going on and on with very little maintenance. Yes, I put quite some time, but now I barely have anything to fix (which kinda bothers me 8) because I like wrenching ) other that some cabin squeaks

As for the Audio system in this car, I suspect you have the HU-800 unit with the 4 CDs which is the one that starts skipping, this has an amplifier under front pass seat that can get wet and fail. This audio unit itself has an amazing sound when it works properly, perhaps one of the - if not the best audio systems in this class of cars, at that time. Again, worth buying used parts off Ebay and may search on this playlist about the subject https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=P ... s0FSVSOT_c

Couple of thoughts. Your electrical issues could be caused by connection issues - natural oxidation of metals at the connection. Before replacing the part, try cleaning the contacts and see if that solves your issues. It is an age and time thing - just like the rubber.

As others are saying, anything rubber will also age and oxidize and harden. Lack of use is actually worse. Fortunately most of these are easy to change out and cheap.

A car that sits is many times worse than a car that sees normal active duty. Collectors start their cars on a regular schedule and move them a small distance for this reason.

Once you catch up all will be well. I think the main suspension components will be just fine - it is the other small stuff that usually suffers.

This is a very well maintained car indeed. But gain, wear is wear so it will need fixes in the future. The important thing is not to bring it to random places and to use the right parts brands.
