Replacing oil pan gasket without lifting engine?

Post by Onod32 » Tue Apr 23, 2019 11:45 am

I have a 93 Volvo 240 which is leaking oil onto the exhaust I just found the leak is coming from the oil pan gasket. I don't have a lift or anything to hoist the engine up except a shop jack. Anyone know anyway around this? My shop is charging $500 for something stupid easy to replace.

240 Oil pan write up.

You don't need to lift the engine but you do need to support it.

I don't trust a 2x4 as a engine support bar.
A engine support bar suitable for DIY cost <$100.00 on eBay.

I've done it with a 1981 VW Rabbit pickup years ago...I had to pull transmission out....then found out crank thrust bearing was shot, so I had to take out crank also....stuff happens.

Can't recall, but maybe two 2x4s were used...I have a cherry picker now
