2000 C70 2.4 T (B5244T) has spark + fuel

Post by Kerpre » Thu Apr 25, 2019 4:23 pm

Hey Guys,

Have brought a 2000 C70 that had a warped head on it.

Replaced the gasket and had the head planed.

Have reassembled the engine and filled her with fluids

* I have spark
* I have fuel pressure
* I have injector pulse
* I have compression
* intake is fine

Car will turn over until it catches (fires once) then the starter will stop.

Is there anything specific to these engines to look for? I can’t work out why it doesn’t want to turn on.

Car was running before pulling the head (drove it home)

First start can be a PITA. It is trying to start then kicking the starter drive back as it should do.
I would do a three second burst of starting fluid in the intake and see if it will make the jump from start to run.

With regards to the starter fluid, I’ve periodically been using ether straight into the throttle body (removed the intercooler piping) will try again and post reaults

Don't remove the piping, pull a vacuum line off off the piping and inject the starting fluid using the spray straw. On my '98 I pull the vacuum line right after the MAF.

If your brand of starting fluid does not come with a spray straw, swap the head with something that does like WD40.

Ahh ok then, will the starter fluid still work? Having to go through the intercooler etc before getting to the cylinders

Yes .. it will mix with the air better and stay in the system better.

Don't over do it. Press and say One Mississippi, Two Mississippi, Three Mississippi then stop spraying. Crank it over.

*update*

I have tried Starter fluid in air box. To no avail.

I measured fuel pressure properly,(proper gauge), by jumping the FP relay, I have 48 psi at the rail valve, is this to high? I’ve read it should be 43.5?

I measured it at the filter too, that read 75psi which tells me fuel pump and filter and tank filter are all fine.

Still no start.

I removed the vacuum line from the regulator and this smelt a little of fuel, very faintly So I suspect this is fine for now. What else can I check to tick off the list?

Is your timing correct, and are the various sensors working? Cam position, TPS, etc.
If everything's good and working, you may have lawnmower syndrome - fuel washed cylinder walls causing no compression, or too low compression. Pull the plugs and let things air out while you check sensors and timing. If sensors and timing are good, put the plugs back in and do the LS procedure.

I.e. gas pedal to the metal, keep it there, run the starter. Don't let up on the starter if the car catches - it'll die and you'll have to start over. Don't let the starter overheat, but you can run it longer than normal if it's LS. Make sure the rpm rises to 3k-ish and the stumble decreases before you let up on the gas. Take it out for a drive.
That said, no compression has a distinct sound to it when the engine turns over, but it's not too easy to distinguish if you haven't heard it before.
