Cylinder 1,2,4 misfire

Post by CoopDeville » Fri Apr 26, 2019 9:59 pm

New user seeking some help. I’ve had a misfire in 3 cylinders for the past 3 months in my 2005 v70r. The car has spark, new plugs, and all of the injectors are in working order. A new fuel pump had been done by the Volvo dealer 2000 miles before I bought the car. The only issue I can see is that the exhaust timing had been off one tooth, I rotated it back into place, and the car runs no different. At this point I am lost. I forgot to mention that the timing belt had also been replace about 40k ago. Any help or new ideas would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Swap coils (2 with 3) and (4 with 5).
Clear codes and see which cylinders are misfiring.
If the misfiring moves from (1, 2, 4) to (1, 3, 5) you got bad coils.

Make sure the bottom of the coils are clean and you bolt them down good. One ground for each coil is through the bolt.

I’ve also swapped the coils around as well as the injectors with no change, I failed to mention that as well. The one thing I can think of is the timing jump bent valves, but it was only one tooth, or a faulty engine ECM.

Have you checked the compression? If that’s OK you might try reseating the ECU in case there are some flaky connections.

Check your fuel pressure at the rail with a gauge. Three cylinders misfiring is a lot. I’m wondering if fuel delivery is bad and you are missing on fuel pressure. The Pump electronics module on these cars can get internally cruddy from oxidation.

Lift, contact cleaner, and reseat of ECU is cheap to do, as well, but corrosion in your dry climate not likely.

Take a Stethoscope and listen to the lifters. Does it sound like 1,2 ,4 are ticking?
Check the oil pressure. The Oil pumps last forever but there is a 0-ring on the oil pick up tube that can crack, dropping pressure enough to starve the lifters.

Use the Stethoscope to listen to the injectors. Does 1, 2, 4 sound different the 3, 5?

Have you scanned for DTCs ? If so, list them here.

1. Compression.
2. ECM connector.
3. Oil pressure.
4. Defects in Coil and/or Injector wiring.

Thank you for the replies, I will check all of these when I get off of work today, compression is at 120psi across all cylinders though, but it isn’t a name brand gauge.

If the compression is even across all five cylinders, that rules out psychological problems. You need to look for something other then problems in the head. Perhaps management or communications is the source of this trouble.

Is there any known people or places I can send the ecm to get flashed in the US? Or should I try VIDA first?

MVS Users Yagger and Doublebug.
Or should I try VIDA first?
You won't be able to clone with VIDA.
There is other software you can use and tutors on how to do it. M44 Wiki is a good source of information.
