1999 ---> 2.5T Oil Filter Tool Recommendation

Post by cn90 » Sun Apr 28, 2019 11:41 am

A little update,

I have both the Assenmacher V410 and Lisle 61660 86mm 16-Flute Tools: $16 vs $8 comparison...
You can read amazon reviews, and this is my review, which is similar to amazon reviews...

- The Assenmacher V410 is well constructed (Aluminum) and fits the oil filter cap tightly. It is a bit difficult to separate it from the cap once installed, but wiggle a bit, it will come out. BEST is the leave the cap attached to the tool during removal, then install it, followed by wiggling to separate them.

- The Lise 61660 tool is also well constructed (Steel), the welds are very strong. It is a tiny tiny bit more "loose" than the Assenmacher. The trick is to add a bit of paper towel or a bit of rubber glove to make it fit tight, but this is a bonus, you don't have to do it unless the oil filter cap is on VERY TIGHT from the previous oil change gorilla.

Whatever you choose, both are very very good tools...
- The Assenmacher requires a 21-mm socket/wrench...
- The Lisle tool requires the standard 3/8-inch drive...

Thanks for the post and pictures.

I use my old fashioned strap wrench.
Even with the oil filter housing almost completely surrounded by the oil pans contours I can get 15º nudges using it.
Three or four such nudges and the housing unscrews freely.
COST: $0

Likewise. I have four different types of filter removal tool and reluctant/too tight to buy another!

Let’s see

The T5 and the P2 take an end cap tool I got from FCP which I like
Both the T4 VW and the BMW use a 36mm socket on the filter housing, ok since I need that for axle shaft bolts anyway..my 36 is also a perfect drift for trailer wheel bearings
Different cap socket for the 1.8T VW
And Evita the S70 needs And end cap for the disposable oil filter on the base model.

My air cooled VWs use a 21mm and 10 mm wrenches

I have the cheap ($7) filter wrench from FCP (gasp!): https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo- ... tools-2489
Just take it out of the tool box and use it. It works.

Or like the guys who own strap wrenches: I now already own this tool, so the COST is $0.
