Rattling Backend

My 88 745 wagon has a very annoying rattle coming from the back end whenever I drive over any slightly bumpy pavement. With the vehicle weight and off the wheels I have smacked, wiggled and twisted everything including the suspension bushings, but everything is tight. But if I thump the bottom of the gas tank something inside is rattling producinq the same sound I hear while driving. The tank itself is firmly firmly mounted and does not move at all. The metal bands holding it onto the car are tight. Could the fuel pump or float be loose inside the tank?
