Hi everyone, my first post here and it won't be my last.. My names Mike and I recently purchased a 2003 S60 2.4T with 140k and initially test driving it i didn't experience any shifting issues, after i bought it, driving away it started slamming when shifting 1-2 & 2-3 other than that it runs and drives amazing...

All the information im reading says to replace the transmission valve body and do a flush + relearn, but i also read i can just replace the Solenoids and do the flush + relearn.

Im pissed about this and hope it can be fixed, but all the information im reading is scary, seems like too many people never get the transmission issues resolved, Is there anyone that can give me a lil info as to what im getting myself into?

Nice first post Mike.

You can progress down the path of the triad of pain....

- Treatment to unstick solenoids
- Replace solenoids
- Replace valve body

....without really losing too much time - the cheapest and easiest one often fixes it.

Ill get the guys to have actually done this tell you what they used.

As mentioned, that 'snap' at gear change is due to stuck/sticking solenoids + some wear on the Valve body/transmission. Not an easy job www.youtube.com/watch?v=2RJyYRQxbZA

I appreciate the response, I'm fully capable of replacing the valve body I've just never worked on a Volvo and I have no factory service manuals no data sheets or any kind of information to go off of.

I suppose the true test will be when I drop the fluid if there's any kind of debris or material in it then I know I got a bigger problem.

I've also got a 711a code which is like a ECM malfunction if there's any info you can give me on that what I found is that there's a service you send the ECM in and they'll fix it and send it back. The transmission guy said there's a possibility that that code has something to do with the shifting but I don't think so

You have to be careful with ECMs as they are keyed to your VIN so if they mess it up you have a brick

So what do you recommend I do about fault code 711a? I have read that some people have the fault code and no issues

I think it’s a CAN Bus error code, if so, those can be spurious and not consequential

Ok one of my last concerns i have yet to even find an answer to... Im seeing a few different Valve bodys for the AW55-50SN Volvo transmission, how do i identify my valve body, does this sound right? AW55-50SN RE5F22A AF33 VALVE BODY & SOLENOIDS FITS VOLVO XC70 XC90 S60 V50 S40II

ECM-711A Engine control module (ECM), internal fault.

Have you worked on a (GM, Saturn, Suzuki) AF23/33-5, Saab AF 57 or Infiniti RE5F22A?

Thank you very much, i will say the reason I suspect that the fault code is Not causing the shift issues is the fact that it only happens once the transmission comes up to temperature, when its cold it shifts just like any normal vehicle, once its to temp it slams and acts up only at shift points.

No ive never worked on an Automatic transmission other than change valve body solenoids or filter replacements, but i have done complete engine rebuilds and solve my own electrical issues, so valve body replacement is right up my alley,

its the software and relearn process that im not familiar with, I didn't realize there's so many auto manufacturers require special software when replacing parts or fluids. But I'm learning a lot from it and I like it
