2011 XC90 (Canada) TPMS Question

Help, Advice, Owners' Discussion and DIY Tutorials on Volvo XC90s. The XC90 proved to be very popular, and very good for Volvo's sales numbers, since its introduction in model year 2003 (North America).

2011 XC90 (Canada) TPMS Question

Post by mooose » Fri May 03, 2019 2:55 pm

I just took delivery of a XC90 2011 to replace my 2005 V70 T5. The manual says that I should have TPMS installed. It seems to be missing. The existing tires seem to have standard valve stems and I do not get a TPMS warning light. I am aware that Canadian models have the ability to turn TPMS off. I tried the "hold the reset button on the turn signal arm while turning on ignition". But this did not change anything. Any ideas?

Probably not the answer you're looking for but I wouldn't trust the tpms anyways. Disclaimer I have never owned a car that has it. But I of heard they a don't work well. My cousin has a GMC truck and her tpms light came on so she kept putting air in her tires, this was in cold Canadian weather. I was doing an oil change for her and she asked me to check her tires with a gauge and she had been running one of them @80 psi because her tpms said her tires needed air

Tire valves are not an indicator as there are later original equipment and replacements that use rubber valve with the sensor attached to a brass tube through rubber stem. The aluminum valve style rotted from road salt. You can go to a dealer with VIN and see if they have any interest in entering VIN and looking at vehicle details file to see if it is fitted OR you let a tire down to below 2 bar (29 psi) and drive and see if the warning comes up. Canada had different requirements for that system and it may not be on your XC90.

I type slow so my response may be a dupe to the others but since I made the effort to write, I'll send it as I wrote it-

Entirely possible you don't have TPMS, it's an option to the base model. I own two XC90s, only one has TPMS. If you can get the car read with VIDA/DICE, you'll see if your car was equipped or not. Stem does not really provide a solid visual indicator since the sensors come in both rubber and metal versions.

For those owners with TPMS, there are a few lower cost options available for sensor replacement when they come due. It's a really "dumb" system on this car, on or off depending on pressure value, and no wheel/tire differentiation.

I participated in a thread on this subject a few months ago, having had a original sensor fail on my '08. Pasting the entire link instead of just some entries- https://forums.swedespeed.com/showthrea ... t-question . There is a description of the system as well as a couple sensor options plus how we were able to "prove" sensor registration with the UEM.

C70-lindsay, I guess that story proves that safety features only work if you understand them. :-) Thanks guys for the comments.
Can anyone with TPMS confirm that the yellow tire warning light comes on in position II before start-up?
Can any Canadian owner confirm that the yellow warning symbol in position II can be turned on/off using the Reset button on the turn signal lever?
I was already confused because I had no "Low Oil Pressure" light in position II either right above where the Tire Symbol should have been. New vehicle, instant panic. LOL Reread the owner's manual where a whole paragraph is devoted to the Oil warning light, and found in very fine print "On certain engines...not used. Instead a text message is provided..."
I do not own Vida/Dice, just an Icarsoft OBD II code reader.

I will be speaking to my mechanic today. They also believe my car should have had TPMS installed. I would appreciate help with these two questions. Thanks.

So, I tried lowering one wheel down to 20 psi and drove several miles at 40 mph. Nothing. I had read that some vehicles did not use the amber symbol but game a written message instead. For what ever reason, I do not seem to have tire pressure monitors.

No I am thinking of buying one. I do have an Icarsoft code reader specific to Volvo though.
