S60 problem with cooling

Post by syzrk » Sat May 04, 2019 11:15 am

I have problem with cooling. Fan is good but don't turn on when car is hot. By vida I can test fan. Power coming to ETS is 5.0v when is hot has 250ohm. What is the solution, how to fix it? I order termostat housing with ets. Might be this bad. And one more the temp gauge is never passing the middle position gauge, even if temp is 100deg C. I've check the motor is moving smoothly. What is going on. Plz help

The gauge will be in the middle over the range 87-105C

It is less of a gauge, more of a three position cooling light.

Good idea to replace the thermostat. Look up on Youtube for videos with tips as it's not that easy

As above, no worries if you hit 100C and the fan still doesn't kick in. It should kick in somewhere around 105C. Test the fan simply by turning the A/C on on a hot day, the fan should start spinning at low speed right away

Best is to replace the thermostat and ECT sensor using Wahler.
I post the trick on how to do this w/o touching the PS Pump in the XC90 forum.

At 105C, water will be trying to be steam, but if you have an antifreeze/water mix, not only does it not freeze in winter but it will not boil until the temp is higher.

You must use antifreeze, and ensure your coolant system can maintain pressure. It is possible the radiator and hose issues are a result of the expansion of steam. Also the gas bubbles can make the cooling less effective and even prevent coolant circulation.

Water boils at 100 °C (212 °F) when the pressure is standard atmospheric pressure (Sea level).

As the pressure goes up, the boiling point goes up. That why coolant systems are designed to be pressurized.

The higher pressure raises the boiling point high enough the coolant will not boil.

If the coolant boils at 105 °C, there is a leak in the coolant system relieving the pressure.

Make sure it is water boiling (steam) not exhaust gasses in the coolant system (Head Gasket).
You can check for exhaust gasses in the coolant system with a Combustion Leak Detector kit.

Water is okay short term, like a week or two, if all these conditions are met

-short term use
- no freezing temperature risk ( ok in ny except North country right now)
- city town low engine load, 45 mph or less to keep heat load down
- cooling system holds design pressure to stop local boiling

Don’t be running water only at 65 mph on the interstate.

Problem fixed
1. Termostat housing and sensor replaced
2. 150 ohm(not lower then 110) resistor parallel with sensor to check if fan is starting in high speed and gauge is moving to high position.
3 check with it temperature sensor termostat od opening at 90deg C and fan is starting at 103deg C(that was my concern I was boiling water when I change to antifreeze was much better.
Thx my friends for posts good luck with repairs.
Any questions don't hesitate to ask.
