Looking for a roof rack for 2000 S70

Post by wrybread » Sat May 04, 2019 12:46 pm

I'm trying to find a roof rack. It'll be carrying kayaks, so needs to be pretty strong. I gather the screws in the side above the doors are for a rack?

Is there some rack people would particularly recommend?

And does it look like this rack would be a good option?

Thanks for any help.

I'd definitely go for that if it's reasonably local to you, if they're genuine Volvo they'll be as strong as Thule. If you're buying new I'd recommend Thule but they can be a bit expensive. Mine are an older version of Thule and I was lucky enough to find them in a junkyard.

Sweet ride! Love that color too.

I have some Thule racks on my old car that look similar. I lost the key though, but I gather I can order a spare.

My mechanic friend (not a Volvo specialist) highly recommends I get Volvo racks that use the little mounting holes on the side of the car. Do yours do that? If not, do they work well enough? Any leaks or anything?

Sure would be easier if I can just swap my old rack over.

I use a Thule rack for a 55 lb canoe. Also had two bikes and a Thule box up there. No issues. The holes above doors line up with a vinyl coated protrusion on the load bar feet. Thule made the Volvo branded ones.

Thanks, it's one of the best cars I've had. I have a wagon now that I like even more.

They have pegs that plug into the holes in the door frame, then you pull the bar caps out and turn them (they have allen keys attached) to clamp the feet down onto the roof.

If you look up the application list on the Thule website you can google the part numbers and find out what other cars use the same bars, to give yourself a better chance of finding some.

What car is your old rack on? If it's another P80 they should fit. The wagons use the same bars unless they have roof rails.

Thanks for the tips.

A 1993 Ford Taurus.... As you can probably guess from that, I'm super loving my new-to-me S70...

And out of curiosity, what do you like better about your wagon?

Wagons go Vroom! And sedans just schroom.

Hank on Cape Cod will sell you a nice Volvo roof rack at a good price. I’ll link you up.

It's not so much it being a wagon, though I've had the seats down a lot more often than I thought I would, it's just that nearly everything about it is slightly nicer.

The biggest difference is the tan leather interior. It put me off a bit at first but it's actually a nicer place to be, the old one had blue half leather. It's a lot quieter and more refined too, thanks to its petrol engine and manual gearbox (the old one was a diesel automatic).
