Look into the O-ring issues.

This is from a 2000 XC, but it is very similar to your 2005 XC O-ring:

Last point, the engine is noisier now, it sounds like a diesel...well, maybe not as noisy but you know what I mean.

Not to sound pessimistic but this is not always good news. If you pause at 25:40 on this video, you can see the pressure sensor at the bottom of the image, at the right of the red power cable, it's tiny and has a wire to it. I think you can remove it with the manifold in place www.youtube.com/watch?v=3fEjbMpVSfo

Well, I do have an '05 and an '06, I can still try to undo the sensor from the 05' and try it in the '06, at least I know if the oil sensor is the problem or not. If the oil sensor is the issue, I guess the car should start and give no warning lights and/or VIDA messages.
I can try this on Saturday and see where does it take.

Alex, check the fitment pages between 2005 and 2006 to see if the parts are identical for certain.

I’m pretty sure They are.

Oil light + message + cam control code + extra noise is an open and shut case of low oil pressure. Drop the pan and inspect the o rings for oil pick up tube and the ones from pump to oil filter housing in pan. Also the ones where pan fits to intermediate section (block). Look to see if there is metal from bearings. If there is metal then you have serious problem and repairing that engine will exceed the cost of a used engine with similar or less miles. By the way, if you get a used engine those same o rings should be changed.

I see that many of you lean to the o-rings more than the sensor, I may ask a silly question here but...if the o-rings are the culprit, shouldn't I see a leakage or have any other alerts before you get the problem ?
Or the car is expected to work fine till one minute ealier and then stops?

It could happend that the inlet mesh for pump screan in cloged. You will have to take out the oil sump to have a look. Or the oring in the oil sump are bad. There is 5 of them on the oil rout before it goes to engine.

Look at the link I posted above.

O-rings, if defective, leaked INTERNALLY (thus low oil pressure), it does not leak externally (thus no oil on driveway).

To expand on what cn90 said, if you look at the link provided, you'll see that the o-rings in question connect and seal various tubes and channels in the oil pan.

Those seals are critical for maintaining oil pressure in the plumbing of the oil pan as the oil pump tries to pump and circulate oil up into and through the engine.

If the inlet mesh of the pickup tube gets sufficiently clogged, then the oil pump can't pick up and pump enough oil at the proper pressure.

If the o-rings fail or get brittle and no longer seal properly, then the oil pump may be pumping ok but all the oil flows past the failed o-rings and back into the pan instead of up and into the engine.

BTW if you want to see what a failed o-ring in an oil pump can do , watch this video about a blown high performance Mercedes engine. No this isn't a volvo, but the principles are the same and he does a great job of explaining what an oil pump does and how a tiny o-ring failure leads to a failed engine.

Skip to 6:50 mark to get to the oil pump description
The o-ring failure description starts at 8:15

The whole series of the engine rebuild is quite something:

Hi guys,

I am trying to locate the oil pressure sensor, I did follow VIDA instructions, lift the car and then remove the side air baffles, then the central one.
They say to disconnect the connector and unscrew the oil pressure sensor.
It looks easy, only a few lines, but I cannot see the bloody connector.

I watched the video posted in this thread but you need to remove the manifold to get there.
If VIDA says to access it from under the car, it means if should be the easiest way to access it.

Any suggestions? Thank you.

Alex

P.S.: I can see the sensor after I removed the splash screen, I guess VIDA (for the first time in my own experience) is wrong.
