S70 upper engine mount - different sizes?

Post by jellybear » Mon May 13, 2019 2:24 pm

Hi all,

I need to replace the upper engine mount on my 1998 S70 with the B5254 engine (125kW naturally aspired, 20 vents).

I get confused when it comes to the bushing diameter: There's lots of aftermarket bushings to choose from, but a majority (=all?) of them seem to be 60mm in diameter. I measured the bushing of my engine to be 57mm in diameter.

Does my engine type have an odd type of bushing? If so, where to get hold of it?

I replaced mine 2 weeks back, and the discrepancy is likely due to the fact that the bushing needs to squeeze into the upper motor mount. After a while, the bushing may shrink to the size of the motor mount which could be the reason why you have a 3mm discrepancy. (I know this for a fact as i took an old one out, struggled with the new one for a few hours, then put it back in as i needed to get the proper tools for the job)

I purchased my bushing from here https://www.volvooftorontoparts.ca/p/Vo ... 34263.html, and the site doubled up as a resource for finding compatible parts for my car. I don't know if they will ship across the pond.

Good luck with the swap, there are a lot of DIY videos, and i would personally go with a pipe fitting based clamp if you want to make your own.

Hey jellybear.

You need the 60 mm. It's a bit of a pain to get these in, but check out the one from Powerflex on VParts.se - I've had one of those in for quite some time now. :) And they're pretty local to you, I guess. Same country, at least. :D

Thanks for the feedback!

I've been through skandix, vparts e.t.c. and what creates a doubt is essentially the following:
- All brushings sold are mentioned to be 60mm. I've measured the one currently in the car to 57mm. Even if I understand there's a certain portion of violence needed to squeeze the new bushing into place, 3mm just seems a little bit too far off to make a fit.
- Skandix statement "If you have an earlier version of the engine mount with a smaller bushing it is neccessray to renew the whole engine mount, use item no. 1004752. Alternatively the Poly bushing 1009874 can be fitted by grinding"

How can I differentiate an "early" bushing from a 60mm one?

It's weird - the Skandix part you listed has all 60mm bushings listed as alternatives. iPD lists this one for your car: https://www.ipdusa.com/products/4738/11 ... 38-8631159
but no mention of diameter... I can't seem to find any mention of a smaller bushing anywhere.

The polys are 2 parts, so they're easier to fit than the standard ones - you just "pull" them together. And remember the 3 V's - Vilja, Vold & Vaselin. ;)

Btw - have you measured the "sleeve", or the bushing that's in there now?

So here's how my upper engine mount bushing looks:
20190514_230220.jpg
58mm is what I got this time measuring under better light conditions. As you can see, diameter measurement is done on the outer edge of the rubber bushing.

On the backside of the bushing is a part number beginning with 68422xxx (the rest is unreadable due to the crack in the bushing) - but it does look very similar to the 60mm OEM one. So I guess I'll have to assume I need the 60mm one and that violence will make it fit.
