I'm Thinking This Is Fuel Pressure Related

Post by Rgierer » Thu May 16, 2019 4:01 am

The car 1998 Volvo V70T5 with about 125,000 miles.

First start when cold is fine. After warmed up, I have to try to start it twice for it to start. If I turn on the key, then stop and adjust seat and fasten seat belt, then hit start it start right up. There is a bit of a gas smell when it starts.

I’m thinking I’m needing to give the fuel pump sometime to build up fuel pressure before it will start.

This has gone on unchanged for 6 months. Recently it has started to die, while at idle. Car starts right up and goes on about it’s task.

I suspect the 2 things are related.

Any guidance

Robin

Three parts of the P80 series fuel system that age.

Fuel pump relay ( checked by jumping with wire)

Fuel pump regulator ( vacuum controlled)..pull hose and sniff for fuel

Fuel pump ..diagnose by exclusion and fuel pressure measurement

Is the temperature gauge right?
On a cold start the Air/Fuel is rich. If the ECM thinks the engine is cold it will try to do a rich air/fuel mixture on a warm start.

When was the last time you clean out the Idle Air Control valve?
