2004 V70 2.5T PCV Elbow (at Oil Trap): 30677388 ($68) vs 1271653 ($12)

Post by cn90 » Thu May 16, 2019 5:53 pm

OK,

My 2004 V70 2.5T is at 110K miles.
I am planning on a PCV job, soon.
I last did the PCV in the 1998 S70 GLT and did a DIY, so familiar with the issues, especially the newer PCV style (banjo bolt etc.).

My engine number is 3183831...

PCV Elbow (at Oil Trap) is the issue:
- According to different websites, for engine # up to 3138170, use the inexpensive 1271653 ($12).
- For engine # from 3138171, use the expensive 30677388 ($68).

I cannot believe this little elbow is $68!!!

Browsing some dealer websites, both PNs are listed as interchangeable for most 2.5T engines.
It looks like I can use the inexpensive 1271653 ($12) for my 2004 V70.

Anyone who has gone through this before, please advise!

There is a TSB about the oil trab on 2004s that haveyou reuse the old box. I just stumbled onto it the other day researching Potts disease. I’ll find and post

Thanks,

I plan to re-use the Oil Trap anyway, simply bc I have a lot of experience with 1998 S70 PCV. The Oil Trap lasts > 200K.

From reading randomly, it seems that the difference in these 2 elbows is in the diameters on the engine block side of the elbow, which is about 2-3mm. I am guessing one can use the "cheap" $12 and push it in.

The diameter difference is much larger than that. You can't possibly use the wrong one. The small one fits with a sizeable margin inside the large one.

My -04 made in April of 03 used the small one.

1+,

Mystery solved, I went to local dealer and physically look at both elbows.

My advice is that...get a flashlight and look down the tight space between manifold crevice to figure out what you have before ordering.

Anyway, here are the dimensions at oil trap and at engine block, I measured these myself using a caliper...

- The Volvo 850, 1998 S70 $12 elbow: 25 mm and 25 mm.

- The later version 30677388, based on split of engine number mentioned above: 25 mm and 40 mm.

You can see the difference is about 15 mm on the engine side.

Does anybody have experience with the IPD version of the 'larger' hose (for $30-something)? Silicone-Nitrile impregnated rubber should last practically forever if it's done right and might even be reusable if it doesn't harden. I'm looking at that should my '06 2.5T use the larger diameter hose there. I'm gearing up to do PCV service on my S60 in the next month or two.

$80 for that OE hose makes my head spin. I know to stay away from aftermarket hoses for this particular job, but might that one from IPD be an exception?

Google "Volvo forum 30677388" and you will see it discussed in forum re IPD elbow.

The URO brand is $9, from amazon review, it fits fine. The question is longevity for URO part.

I would question whether you really need to replace that elbow.

Buy a case of 10 and you will he all set for 5 years at least, and you will be expert at PCV system removal.

Thanks chrismn and abscate, haha...

- Chrism is correct, I have done a few PCV in 1998 S70 at 110K, 150K etc, that rubber elbow always seem fine.
However, it is the mentality that "while there replace it" that prevails, plus, in the P80, it is only $12.

- I am now thinking re-using the elbow if it looks good.

- In fact, I will be writing a DIY for P2 soon in a critical way for those at 100K-110K, replace ONLY what is broken for those who are short of budget.
