Cam Sensor for 1999 S70

Post by farzadm » Sat May 18, 2019 5:13 pm

1999 S70
I replaced my head and then new one came with the shafts and the cam sensor (half round) attached, is this sensor compatible with a ignition coil (distributor less) system, what should be the matching sensor at the end for it to work.? I was told by the head supplier to change the aluminum sensor with the plastic sensor (second image) and this should work.

The plastic type takes a totally different reluctor for the cam. The one you showed in the 1st picture goes with the aluminium bodied sensor which is made by Bosch.

The plastic type goes with 2002+ cars

Does it take the aluminum body one shown in the picture ?
I can’t see the reluctor interfacing or coming in front of the pick up sensors on both the options.

Re: Cam Sensor for 1999 S70

I installed the aluminum sensor and still no start, the engine keeps spinning. Couple of questions hopefully someone can provide some insights

1. Are you sure that the reluctor and sensor are correct pairs? The first 2 pictures are of the reluctor I originally had with the aluminum sensor body. The 3 picture is of the reluctor installed and 5 picture is with the aluminum installed and still no start.

2. If the reluctor and sensor pair are correct is my timing way off ? When I installed the cams I had to advance the crank up 4 notches to ensure rear notches are parallel to the head. Will a compression test help to see if the cams are installed properly? I have added a video to show how it sounds when cranked.

Appreciate for any assistance.

Your video won't play with VLC media player. You can add it to You Tube with much better results here.

It's more important that you show a pic of the end of the cam without the reluctor installed.

You can see that the chunky reluctor has already been ground off in an attempt to make it fit something it wasn't designed for. As I said the plastic bodied ones aren't in use in the P80 series.

What sort of head is the new one? I suspect it's from an 850 or a 97-98 Volvo

I will add the video to you tube later tomorrow and also a pic of the end of the cam.

I know the end of the cam has one diagonal slot only, there is no additional (third notch) to allow for the original chunky reluctor to be placed there. I ground off the chunky reluctor to make it fit on this camshaft.

I am not sure what vehicle the head is from, my timing belt had slipped and hence had to change the head, when i bought the head i had provide my car 99 s70 and B5452S engine. I installed this head and then realized i had to change everything that attaches to it, ie cams, camcover, engine mount and now the sensor. The guy who sold the head, said i need to install the plastic sensor and need to cut my original aluminum sensor to install the plastic one. But I don't see how either the aluminium or the plastic one will work with the reluctor that i have, they should work with the chunky one as it does come under the sensor.

I am not sure do if i need to change the sensor, or just the cams or the whole head to get a compatible one. On hind sight i should have just rebuilt my original head.

The B5254S from 1999 is a different beast from previous years due to different cam sensor pickup which is on intake on 99s as opposed to exhaust on earlier cars.

If you still have the 99 head you can install the original reluctor to reference the home position/starting angle and offset of the reluctor and compare it to how it installed on the new head.
