Have you tried Erie VoVo in Utica? I can shuttle the part to anywhere in greater Boston on my milk run on Tuesday each week - when Harvard and MIT relinquish the money they temporarily are holding for me.

The supposed speed-sensitive rack I recently ordered from eBay showed up 1) in a plastic bag (!) and 2) as a non-speed sensitive rack. The journey continues. The application of the bar code stickers to prevent the tie rods from breaking through the bag were a nice touch, but ultimately unsuccessful.

I'd forgotten what I was reading this morning, & opened up where I'd left off & vaguely recognized the Hefty-bag "mummy" I'd seen earlier here.

Quite the presentation upon delivery! Too bad it wasn't correct fitment.

I too need to replace the rack on our 2006. What were your symptoms, if you don't mind me asking (besides a wet drivers side of subframe)?

I had been looking most closely at Detroit Axle's XC racks, but looks like they've since gone invisible. They were around $250, lifetime warranty, and shipped free. Dang-it.

Same symptoms, but on the passenger side. At this point, the leak is very slow and produces a couple of nickel sized spots wherever I park for the day. I put a couple of oz. of the green Pentosin in once or twice every 2 weeks.

Might be worth trying ATP or Lucas stop leak product if the leak is that’s small. Maybe you can buy another year or two? Let me know about Erie. Probably going by next Tuesday, then BOS on the 19th

I was given a non-volvo convertible about a year ago with leaky top hydraulics. I added some synthetic oil to system and then it started leaking much much worse. After several refills, I got desperate and finally added some blue devil stop leak ... it completely stopped leaking. I was shocked that that stuff really works. I was thinking that I wished I had known about that stuff prior to replacing two volvo 240 PS systems back in the day. Highly recommend Abscate's suggestion before replacing rack. I don't know about about Lucas, but blue devil isn't supposed to clog up your system, so, you really have nothing to lose trying it.

Other than the leak you don't have any steering abnormalities though?

On mine, it's a very bizarre sensation when cornering left around long, banking somewhat sharp bends in the road. It's almost like an invisible hand is forcing the steering wheel OPPOSITE the direction of the corner. Not nearly as bad on right banking corners. I haven't zero'd in on the leaks exact location, but it's wet around the top of the pinion and where both hard lines plumb in.

I too dumped & pumped out the red atf/PS fluid that was in the car when we got it & replaced with Pentosin & the leak increased.

@Abscate, dj_v70 - In terms of experimentation with fluids and additives, I had initially added the Lucas power steering product a few times and then decided to see if the existing fluid had simply broken down due to age. The fluid I got out of the reservoir was pretty nasty and I refilled it with some fresh Pentosin (CHF-202 or whatever the appropriate stuff is). Regretfully I've not been scientific about how much I'm losing now versus before but maybe the leak has slowed.

I think it all started after a failed attempt by a tire shop to do a front-end alignment after I had new tires installed. The passenger tie rod nut is frozen with corrosion and they likely buggered the seals trying to get it to move (I have read that this can harm the seals...thanks guys!)

I'm willing to experiment to buy more time. I also have some ATP stop leak that I can try, or go back to the Lucas. My logic (and it might be flawed!) is that I'm willing to try a higher viscosity fluid to reduce the leakage in trade for more wear/shorter life for the pump. Pumps are plentiful in the local junkyards and really easy to replace (vs the rack itself).

I am also trying to build a cross reference of sorts to understand which models have this rack.

@ Pete - No abnormalities that I can sense, but I've only had it for 15 months and 17k miles so I haven't had the "showroom fresh" experience to compare it to. I do like the way it handles corners, but maybe that's because I replace the front struts and end links. Yours is seemingly leaking in a different place than mine. Mine is coming out the tie rod boot on the passenger side.
