2001 XC70 ABS Error code - TRACS

Post by jac2086 » Wed May 22, 2019 6:43 am

This is my first post on this forum.... normally i can find the topic and info on the site for everything i need but i'm pulling my hair out with this one.

Have a 2001 V70 X/C with 125k miles that i picked up for my daughter - needed a turn-up, ball joints, control arms, front C/V joints, brakes, tires and of course a re-manufactured valve body. All that work went smooth and have been driving it now for about 8K miles.

The other day i heard a noise that sounded like a repetitive grinding when i reached 20 MPH and the brake, ABS and Traction control light came on. my code reader says they were ABS-0031 (rear wheel sensor faulty signal) and ABS-0066 (front brake discs - Temp too high).

I replaced the ABS sensors in each wheel and also replaced the TRACS Control module (although it is used from EBAY and did not have it rebuilt). Also checked the brakes to make sure they were not locked up and made sure the drive axel bolt was tight and torqued. I cleared the coded and tried driving it again. No warning light to start but still hear the grinding noise when i reach 20MPH or so.... noise stops when i step on the brakes. Once the Traction Control warning light comes on the noise stops. I am thinking the noise is the pump? None of the other lights for sensor or E-Brake have come back since i replace the module... only the Traction control light.

Any thoughts on what to look at next would be appreciated. The problem is obviously tied to the noise.... just not sure where is coming from..... is it the TRACS Module or the Pump?

It might be the repetitive noise i am hearing is the traction control kicking in while i am driving - as i drive faster i can feel the speed slow as the noise happens. after the light comes on the noise and traction control braking stops.

Wonderful first post, thanks for following our guidelines!

I love Fairport and cruise the Canal sometimes

One cause of ABS IS loose axle shaft nuts on the wheels. The ABS ring has to be in the right place or else it will trigger the ABS system

Look at the wheel bolt after removing the small wheel cover. If it isn’t brand new, the shop that’s did your work did not read the procedure. This bolt is a single use, torque to yield bolt which has to be replaced each time it is removed. It won’t torque right if it’s been worked over

Thanks for the reply abscate - I checked the axle nuts and all seem to be solid - i know the fronts i torqued myself to the specs - also when i look in the ABS sensor hole the ring is in the correct place.

I put the old module back in - from what i was told by Matt over at Midwest this 2001 model of module rarely fails. Both the old one and the one from Ebay have the same results in error messages.

I clear the codes - drive and once i hit 15-20 mph i hear the grinding of the traction control pump and feel the brakes pulsing. Also see the dash light dim a but while the pump is on. After about 1/2 mile the TRACS light comes on and the pump sound stops. After about a mile the ABS light comes on and a maintenance message appears. I cleaned each ABS sensor and the ring (as best i could). also checked the wiring it see if there was a break or pinch i could see.

The two codes i get are ABS-0031 (rear wheel sensor faulty signal) and ABS-0066 (front brake discs - Temp too high)

Have new rear sensors coming today and will replace them. I have never seen a front brake disc temp code before - might just be an error in the aftermarket code reader i have (iCarsoft Volvo/SAAB OBD-II multi systems Scanner Tool, SRS ABS Engine oil reset, EPB i906-II).... can't believe i would have a disk brake high temp after a 2 mile drive when the wheels are spinning freely. Wen i stop the disks are barely warm to the touch.

Does anyone have a schematic of the module connector? I would assume each sensor comes back to the control module. There must be a way to test each sensor with a meter.

At 15 mph the ABS system conducts a self test - and it won't activate until it completes this.

It sounds like as soon as you self test, it locks on.

The temp reading is 'fake' it doesn't actually read the temp of the disc but infers it from how much pressure it has put on the brakes. Yours is just timing out.

You most likely have a bad input into the Module from a bad sensor. Hope that fixes it.

Replaced the rear sensors and still have the same issues and error codes. Not sure which code to keep troubleshooting. First code and light is the traction control and the second light is the ABS..... not sure if the first traction control light is associated with the second ABS fault.

ABS code says the left rear sensor is not responding.

Nasty. I used a Centric rear hub on my FWD but I think your XC uses an expensive rear hub,,,sorry.

Jim from MN just did one and found source ow price about $120 or so, vs $176 for FAG from usual supply chain.
