New Member New to Volvo

Post by Saltyvolvo » Wed May 22, 2019 11:22 pm

Howdy.

My wife’s daily driver Prius was lost to flooding streets a few Fridays back. I bought her a volvo v70r from a Swede last week. It has some dash lights on and one that comes and goes.

She’s afraid to drive it now because of the codes. The messages say-
1. Chassis settings service chassis
2. Something about regular maintenance
3. Low oil fill oil

The other issues are scary for her but they don’t have a dash code-
4. Gas tank only holds 8.4 gal then if you try to put more it leaks from the tank
5. Radio volume can go up unexpectedly and the knob doesn’t work.
6. Sunroof button doesn’t do anything.

I already bought her a Jensen GPS head unit with a backup camera and microphone for hands free calls with everything for installation from crutchfield before the oil and maintenance messages started coming up.

The car is spotless. Perfect paint. 8/10 interior. Rims are in great shape and the tires are 2016 Michelin. 174k miles on the odometer.

I want my wife to have a great car for the next few years while our house is built and we’re setting in. Can you guys on the forum help me with the issues above?

Where to start....

The service message is mileage based to indicate service is due. You can lookup how to reset it.

Low oil... Have you checked the oil level? It might just be low.

The service chasis message is probably related to the electronic struts. Either they have been swapped out for standard struts of have failed. Check what struts are installed.

Volume is probably failing steering wheel controls.

The oil level is always at the top of the mark on the dip stick.

I started using steering wheel controls yesterday and all functions were working.

I’ll take a look at the struts but the car is handling great. It’s the smoothest car I’ve ever been in. Contrast it to my moms 2007 Caddy DTS and the Volvo is so much more comfortable without having the numb feel of an older American car. I’ll try to take time to take wheels off and get some pictures of the suspension.

I found out how to clear the service due light yesterday. I’ll try it soon.

What about the gas tank though? Why can I only get it half full? Why does it run out when I try to pump more in?

Does the gas leak out of the filler neck, or from elsewhere (under the car)?

you wife is the first woman who even looks at the dash that I know of. All mine turn the volume up on the radio to mask the dying
sounds from a transmission left in low on the freeway. Few people besides my self know that that a car can go 65 in low gear. Your real concern is once a woman thinks the car is not reliable she gets nervous and wants a new one. put masking tape over the dash warnings and add oil yourself so these thirsty Volvos don't worry her. The gas tank thing you will have to fix, it must be the fill tube, other tubes are on top and you should be able to get 3/4 tank in before they leak. surprised its not showing a evaporations code.

It’s leaking from under the car. It’s the gas tank but I’m not sure where. I haven’t really looked.

I smelled burning oil when I stopped today. The oil was near the bottom of the ok marks. I topped it off with 5w-20. I got pictures of the dash lights.

I still haven’t fixed anything. Here’s some pictures. Alarm System is a new light.

The gas tank on these cars is segmented into right and left sides with a rise in the middle. The tank I believe holds around 21 gallons, so each side holds about half that, and you’re filling just about that much. I’d guess there’s a crack in the tank around where it’s segmented so that you can fill the side of the tank closest to the filler, and it then starts spilling as it fills up over the rise. One way to pinpoint it would be to clean up and dry out the underside of the tank, and then add just enough gas to make the leak occur (at home with a portable gas tank and not at the station). Then try to identify the source.

I would recommend against driving it until you can get the gas tank issue diagnosed.

I had a similar problem but rather then volume it was the station that would change magically. The steering wheel controls still worked but internally where worn and falsely triggered.

The struts have probably been replaced, but with non 4C struts, hence the chassis message. R models come with 4C Monroe struts and replacement are nearly $1k, so frequently they are replaced with non 4C struts triggering that message. Look for a wire near the bottom of the struts. No wire not 4C.

Your best chance of resolving the issues is to search this forum for the messages you are getting. Your find a lot of good information.

Alarm system warning might be because of a faulty alarm module, had that problem on a V70 I used to own. It also affected the operation of the sunroof. The module is located in front of the passenger front wheel, remove the wheel liner and you'll see it.

The women in my house get 250k on clutches, 60-90lk on brake pads, and know how to tow cars home with rope.

Its a NY thing..
