Engine System Service Required

Post by michaelunderway » Fri May 24, 2019 6:46 am

I drive a 2001 V70XC with about 175k miles on it. I generally do all the maintenance and repairs myself. A few days ago had the engine system service required light come on and I can't get it to go away. I have tried the odometer button reset that generally works. My closes Volvo dealer is almost 2hours away through the mountains. This weekend I plan on pulling the ETM and cleaning it, swapping out the brake position switch with a known good one and changing the fuel filter. Does anyone have any other suggestions on what I can start looking at? It seems to run well, has no DTC codes. The spark plugs are only a year old. What else would cause this light to stay on? Thanks in advance.

Dont know, but you are able to reset it using Vida. If your dealer is 2 hours away, I would suggest to invest in a DICE unit

I own 3 Volvos so I do plan on getting Vida/Dice unit when I have the funds. But for now I just want to make sure the car runs safely until I get one. Thanks

If it is running well and not misfiring, it can probably wait until you can get a code reader on it. If you have a auto parts store nearby, then can read codes for you - get the Pxxxx format code, not the text reader word salad.

The cheap ones won't read the more complex codes.

Unless the message is the service interval message, not the service required message?

Check your manual for the difference (those are online if you have lost yours)

The odometer reset is the SRL or service reminder light.

This one is a fault in one of the car's emission systems. It can be a sensor or throttle that has operated outside of expected values.

Any code reader will perform a reset of the DTC (diagnostic trouble code) including Torque through an ELM327 , though there are some instances that it can't handle and that's when I pull out my Autel AL619 or Vida Dice.

Has the reset menu through your OBD readers failed to temporarily clear that message?

If my OBD readers clear the message it comes right back. I may have to wait until I get a Vida/Dice setup. Thanks
