Replacing A/C Compressor

Post by volvooh » Wed May 29, 2019 5:52 am

2008 Volvo V70, 156,xxx mi. I purchased the vehicle knowing I would need to replace the compressor, makes a noise that sounds like rattling spoons. How is the serpentine belt relaxed to facilitate removal? Also, where is the A/C dryer located? Makes sense to replace this as well if I am going to the effort of the compressor.

Not an expert on the 2008s but I expect the drier is mounted on the condenser like the P2s - unlike the P80s with the big coffee can near the frame member. Look for an aluminum soda can size thing or a skinny tube thing near the condenser?

Volvooh,

For my 2010 S80 3.2 the dryer is a desiccant bag inside the condenser.

It comes in a sealed aluminium Mylar bag and it only has a 1 year shelf life.

Don't open the Mylar Bag until you are ready to install the desiccant in the condenser.

The cap that holds the bag in place uses a Torx T-70 fastener.

I didn't check but I would think that the V70 uses the same configuration

This is what I bought

GENUINE VOLVO 30776238 Receiver Drier Insert

If I had to do it again I would also replace the plastic cap witht he O-rings and filter screen at the same time (I don't have the part number handy)

Note: to replace the desiccant bag you need to lift the radiator and Fan and then lower the cross-member under the radiator. This will expose the plastic cap with the T-70 that needs to be removed. Also don't forget to remove the R134a first.

Good Luck

Paul

P.S. I ended up replacing the AC compressor also and now it blows really cold

Item #2 and #3

These are what I would replace

To remove the old bag you just need needle nose pliers or small fingers

The Bag fits inside the condenser, picture not to scale.
