PCV vent hose broken

Post by Volvolio » Sat Jun 01, 2019 3:59 pm

Hello guys !

I am new to the volvo family as I bought a week ago a XC70 2005 with 225k kms. It drives really nice everything works except AWD. Sure enough Ive already started to have mechanical problems with it.

First one was the fuel filter wich was all rusted and leaking like crazy after a couple of rides.Had it changed , fairly easy job and everything looked good after.

So today I open up the hood to inspect the engine and I noticed the hose on top of the engine was loose. Looks like top part wich goes in the engine is broken and the rubber hose on the lower part is cut loose.

Engine oil level is good , no white stuff and there seems to be a bit of engine oil on the front radiator hose.

2 questions :

Can I keep driving my car until this is repaired ?

Is it possible to change only this hose or my problem is probably bigger and I will need to change the whole PCV system ?

The hose on top will spew oil onto the top ( you can see it’s already doing that) , that is part of the PCV system. Get some tape around it as a temporary fix until you do the whole PCV job

The other hose is the evap purge line, eventually it will give you an engine code. It’s easyto replace all those hoses. Your car will run poorly in the cold weather with that hose broken. Get some hose from a local parts store to match.

Believe it or not, the PCV hose to the top of the engine can be changed without the need to remove the I.M.

Buy only Volvo genuine hose.
Lubricate the lower end with oil before inserting.

The car has been well maintained actually the suspension brakes and exhaust are all fairly new.

Just to make sure : those are actually 2 different hoses ? I thought they mated together. Both are parts of the PCV system right ?

From reading on this I understand that its a common problem on these P2 and that my system is most likely clogged and need to be completly changed.

How much should I expect to pay if I go to a garage and would you guys have a link to the kit I should buy if I wanted to do it myself.

Thanks a lot for your help guys

Big hose PCV
Small hose vacuum feed to the Evap canister

It’s only a problem if oil changes are neglected.

I looked at it again and I really think it is the same hose. From watching a video it seems to be the hose wich goes to the pcv box. Its the same size of hose , dont know if its suppose to come in one piece or they just overlap each other in normal conditions.

Here is the picture hope its better

Ah yes. I thought you were indicating the smaller vacuum hose just to the right of your red mark

That is the same hose. It goes down, then turn To the right and then connects to the PCV BOX

Don’t buy an aftermarket one , get a Volvo part. It won’t be cheap.

With the amount of crud collected on that hose chances are your PCV system is clogged. To give it the 'Glove Test' you'll need to install a temporary vacuum hose from the valve cover to the oil trap.

If it's clogged I recommend this kit as it includes all parts needed and worked fine on my P2

If the system isn't clogged then this is the Volvo replacement hose

Thanks so much guys

I have an appointment at my garage in 2 weeks , is it dangerous to break something in the engine if I keep driving until then ?

I really apreciate the support from this community I feel its going to be quite useful as I really want to keep this car for a long time.
